Mick Channon talks us through the West Ilsley team for 2020 including a look at some of his two-year-olds who are pleasing at home.
AIR FORCE AMY
She should make up into a nice stayer this year. She’s a filly we think is crying out for a mile-and-a-half plus. She won at Pontefract last back-end and is a nice filly who has gone right way and will be ready to go.
AWEEMAWEH
We always thought a bit of him and he just went weak on us last year as a two-year-old. He’s done physically very well and six or seven furlongs will be his trip. He’ll be ready to go when racing starts and I was very pleased with his win at Woverhampton and he came out of it well. I don’t know where we’ll go but probably look for a novice first then see.
BARBILL
He was a typical very good two-year-old who just missed his three-year-old career. They say good two-year-olds make very good four-year-olds and he’s in good form. He’s off 92 and I think that’s a winning mark. He won a Group Three as a juvenile, he’s been gelded and is a different horse now. I think he could make up into a really nice sprinter.
CHAIRMANOFTHEBOARD
We’ve had lots of little problems with him but he has plenty of ability and we might bring him back to six furlongs having been running him over seven and a mile. He’s in great form, working well and he wintered pretty good.
CITY WANDERER
A real nice horse who just pulled a muscle after winning at Windsor and that was the end of his season. He’s going well now and can make into a nice four-year-old.
DALANIJUJO
She’s not back in yet so I can’t tell you much more about her. We think she’s nice and she showed plenty at two. She’s due back any day.
FANNIE BY GASLIGHT
She’s been ready to go all winter and we’ve just given her a bit of a break now as the ground looks like being quick everywhere for a little while. She needs a bit of cut so we’ll see what the weather does in the next few weeks but I’d have thought we might bring her back later in the year.
GLEEDS GIRL
She won at Bath, a nice race, and I think she’s improved. She’s a sharp filly, Equiano's progeny do improve and she’ll develop into a nice sprinter. She might get seven furlongs but I think six will be her trip.
HATS OFF TO LARRY
We think there’s a good race in him. He’ll get anything from a mile-and-a-quarter to a mile-and-a-half and maybe a bit further. We think he’s a very good horse who could win a big handicap if things go right.
INDIAN CREAK
As solid as a rock and is a great advert for his stallion Camacho. He keeps turning up, defying all the odds and is a smashing little horse. He improved all the time, looks great, has done very well over the winter and I’m very pleased with him.
MILLTOWN STAR
He’s a pretty decent horse over seven furlongs to a mile. He improved all last year. We think a lot of him and I think there’s a Group race in him somewhere.
RAINS OF CASTAMERE
A nice horse who won at Kempton before the shutdown. He’s not rated high at the moment but he could have a lot of improvement in him.
RHYME SCHEME
She’s nice. She was second on the all-weather the other day and seven furlongs or possibly a mile will be her trip. We want to win her maiden and then see if we can find a nice handicap.
SEVERANCE
A very talented horse but it’s been a long job getting him going the way we want. Paul, my head lad, has done a great job with him and he’s settled a lot better now. He was a breeze-up horse who cost a lot of money and I think he’s going to be alright. I think there’s a big handicap in him too. He’ll get a mile-and-a-half.
SLY MINX
She was second at Lingfield the other day but I think she could make into a nice stayer. She’s got plenty of ability and scope and is a nice filly.
STORTING
Got plenty of talent but always seems to find a way of getting beat. He’s very talented and seems to have wintered well. We’ve had little niggles with him all his career which I think are the reasons he gets beat a few times. He hangs and lugs one way so you put that right and he’ll go the other way. He’s had a good winter and going well at the moment. He’ll want a bit of cut.
WALK ON BY
She’s done very well and I think she could make up into a nice handicapper. I think we could have a bit of fun with her.
WIGHTMAN
Showed plenty of ability in three starts at two and is another who could make his mark in handicaps this time around.
There are a couple of nice unraced fillies too, SEAGULLS NEST who is by Camelot, while an unnamed daughter of Sixties Icon, and Wansdyke Lass, also go well.
They seem nice. We don’t know at the moment but a filly by Kodiac out of Zarafa, who we bred ourselves, goes nicely. There’s a nice colt called CHATTRI, who’s by Sepoy, while I like ARCADIAN HEIGHTS, by Exceed And Excel out of Lady Lahar. She's a very nice filly.
DIAMONDS DANCING is another nice filly as is ADACE, a daughter of Adaay. For later on the year JANIE JONES and SAUILE STAR are two names to note.
