Breeders' Cup news: Maxfield ruled out of Juvenile

Leading Breeders' Cup Juvenile contender Maxfield will miss Friday's race, leaving an eight-runner field for the $2million dollar contest.

The Future Stars Friday feature was being billed as a three-horse clash between locally-trained Eight Rings from the west coast, east coast raider Dennis' Moment and the unbeaten Brendan Walsh runner, who was was to represent Godolphin.

However, on Tuesday morning it was revealed that the wide-margin Grade One Futurity winner would have to be scratched from the race.

"We're not sure what it is yet, we're hoping it's just a foot (abscess)," Walsh said. "This morning when we washed the poultice off and gave him a jog up as we do, he wasn't quite right. You can see that something's bothering him."

The news prompted a shake-up in the betting market, with Sky Bet making Dennis' Moment, trained by Churchill Downs' leading handler Dale Romans, as the marginal favourite at 6/4. Eight Rings will bid to give Bob Baffert a fifth victory in the race and he's hot on the heels of the market leader at 13/8.

The new third-favourite is Scabbard representing trainer Eddie Kenneally and the Breeders' Cup all-time winning most jockey Mike Smith.

There are no European representatives in the TVG-backed Juvenile.
