ARIKA rather jumps off the page in a race laden with old all-weather stalwarts. This will be Arika’s first start since October and his first for Karl Burke since leaving Jane Chapple-Hyam (remains in same ownership) in the early autumn, and those two things alone make him of some interest, given the last two runners Burke has acquired from other yards, Northern Ruler and Royal Champion, both won at the turn of the year having very well backed. Arika goes well fresh, which is another positive, his best start of last year coming after a 158-day break at Lingfield in July when beaten a head and a short-head in a three-way photo over a mile. That excellent run came off a 5lb higher mark and Arika looks well treated off 59 here if the switch to Burke has the positive effect expected.
Arika likes to race prominently and finds himself in a race where the majority of his rivals tend to be held up and that gives the son of Speightstown an excellent chance of bouncing out and making all the running.
2:22 Southwell - Class 6 (0-50) Classified Stakes 1m 3f 23y
The early market favours High Court Judge over RUBELLITE here, but I’d have that the other way around, and Rubellite can get the job done for supporters. High Court Judge came good at the fifth time of asking for James Owen at Wolverhampton last time out, but in beating Walk The Moon and This Time Maybe, who between them have had thirty-two goes without success so far, he didn’t need to run above his modest official rating of 46, and when the Kitten’s Joy gelding finished a fair third to stablemate Destinado here two starts ago, he appeared to not to get the trip on this stiffer track.
He’s got to give 5lb to the selection today, and Rubellite’s win over Busby (who goes in the second division of this) at Newcastle last time has more depth to it, with the runner-up a solid yardstick that wins in his turn. Fourth home Typewritten gave the form another boost when only just failing to get up in a similar contest last week at Newcastle, and the underlying impression is that the Newcastle form is that bit stronger that what High Court Judge achieved in winning at Dunstall Park. A repeat of that latest effort would surely give Rubellite outstanding claims of following up, and he looks the way to go.
