Star tipping team Rory Delargy and David Massey have a Chelmsford fancy as they look to follow up today's Market Rasen winner.
1pt win Eyed in 2.05 Market Rasen at 2/1 (Unibet, William Hill) - min 15/8
1pt win Ultramarine in 6.00 Chelmsford at 5/1 (Ladbrokes, William Hill) - min 4/1
Not much to go at today over jumps, with small fields the order of the day at Taunton, but Market Rasen has a couple of interesting handicaps worth exploring further.
Both of today’s selections have a common theme running through them insomuch as both were formerly trained by Paul Webber but have improved since joining new yards.
In the case of EYED here, his improvement came after wind surgery when he finished a good second to Camino Rocio at Wincanton at the end of last month, just no match for the winner late but looking like the run, his first since May, would bring him on plenty.
The winner went in again at Huntingdon on Tuesday so the form is solid, and this slightly longer trip, with the usual significant Rasen rail movements added in, should be to his benefit.
Happy Index has the best recent form in this staying handicap hurdle, being another to win second start after leaving Paul Webber at Perth in September, and the question is whether the near 3m1f trip would suit, as it was only 2m4f at Perth.
It doesn’t take too much digging to come to the conclusion that Happy Index could improve again for the longer trip as his dam, Alasi, was placed at Grade 2 level on her only start at 2m7½f at Ascot and the further you go back into the family, the more stamina you find, with Alasi’s dam a half-sister to decent staying chasers Androma – who won two Scottish Grand Nationals – and Bigsun, a winner over 4m at Cheltenham.
Although put up 9lb for the Perth win, the placed horses have won well since and Happy Index is bred to much better than his current mark, so is a confident choice to follow up.
ULTRAMARINE is best over 7f on an artificial surface after a recent run, with form figures in all-weather handicaps reading 1128162612. A winner at Wolverhampton in September, he’s run well at both starts since at this level, and very much caught the eye finishing best for second over 6f at Kempton last time in a race run to suit those on the pace.
Ultramine is a C&D winner who remains on a winning mark, having scored off his current rating at Kempton in February, and he should continue in form given he hit a purple patch at around this time last year, winning in November, December and January. He will appreciate the return to 7f tonight and is expected to go very well again.
