Glorious Goodwood - Day one live!

RESULT - Goodwood 4.45

1st Under The Covers (16/1)

2nd El Astronaute (11/2)

3rd Boom The Groom (14/1)

4th Poyle Vinnie (7/1)

1625: The five furlong sprint handicap comes up next and last year's winner El Astronaute is favourite at 7/2.

He's going to help set a ferocious pace with lots of trailblazers in there and there's a chance it could be teed up for something like Duke Of Firenze. His jockey Fran Berry will need the splits at the right time and if you're having a bet in this event it's possible best to position yourself behind the sofa. It's unlikely to be stress free.

Sky Bet are attempting to help ease the trouble-in-running fears and offer four places instead of three - click here to place your bets.

1615: It wouldn't be Glorious Goodwood without winners for Richard Hannon and Ryan Moore and they've combined to great effect with winning newcomer Watan, a son of Toronado who powers home from Dirty Rascal.

RESULT - Goodwood 4.10

1st Watan (6/1)

2nd Dirty Rascal (11/4)

3rd Enough Already (25/1)

1600: The six furlong maiden up next and Saeed bin Suroor, who saddled the winner of this a couple of years ago when Best Solution scored under James Doyle, is responsible for the favourite Al Mureib.

He's got experience under his belt after finishing second at Newmarket's July Festival and is clearly expected to come on for that run. He's posted quite wide in stall 12 under Pat Cosgrave.

Gainsborough Hat has attracted support first time out for Mark Johnston and he has stall one with William Buick taking the ride.

1555: John Gosden said on Racing UK: "He and the second showed enormous courage. The pace was a little stop-go which you'd expect, but I've nothing but admiration for him and the second.

"What a fabulous race. They criticise four white socks and a white face but he's got a lot of heart and he had the race under control in the last furlong.

"He's the most charming horse to be around, he's a real gentleman."

1542: Tremendous stuff from John Gosden's classy stayer. He has that potent combination of stamina and speed and his half-length victory over old foe Torcedor arguably doesn't do him full justice.

He know 'just' needs to complete the set in the Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup at York next month to land connections a huge ยฃ1million bonus.

A sad postscript to the day's feature as the Queen's Call To Mind appeared to break down injured mid-race. Fortunately, the news from the track is that he'll be taken back to the yard tonight for assessment.

RESULT - Goodwood 3.35

1st Stradivarius (4/5 favourite)

2nd Torcedor (100/30)

1526: It's the big race on day one with Stradivarius now 8/11 on course for the Goodwood Cup.

He beat Torcedor at Royal Ascot and is bang on course for the ยฃ1million bonus - which he'll collect for connections with victory here and at York in the Lonsdale Cup next month.

Sky Bet make him their latest Price Boost so click here to get involved.

1512: Fantastic stuff in the Lennox and another winner for favourite-backers, with joint-fav Sir Dancealot nosing to victory over Suedois. It seemed Danny Tudhope had timed it to perfection on the runner-up, only for Gerald Mosse to swoop on David Elsworth's recent July Cup fourth.

You're going to think I'm making this up but Elsworth has just mentioned problems he's had in the past with the winner's testes. Is there a new angle here developing? I must ask the next trainer I speak to about the horse's tackle. Another one to be declared on the racecards, maybe? IWT - Issues With Testicles.

1458: Meanwhile...

1455: Now we're going through the gears and we're looking ahead to the Group Two Lennox Stakes, where Sky Bet are offering an EXTRA PLACE again. So it's four places for each-way thieves out there and Suedois appeals at the prices.

He's the final Value Bet selection on day one and he was a fantastic third in the Summer Mile at Ascot last time. Time will tell how good that form is (Beat The Bank and Lord Glitters run tomorrow in the Sussex) but David O'Meara's charge is basically a solid horse with global form in the book and he won't mind the slight easing of the ground.

Place your bets with Sky Bet right here.

The late money has come for Godolphin runner D'Bai who is 6/1, while Guineas runner-up Tip Two Win is holding his spot at the top of the market despite proving weak through the morning.

1446: A smiling Johnston said in his interview with Racing UK: "He gave away a lot of distance last time but I didn't think he'd do it again. I could see he was going to run on into a nice position but I didn't think he'd come past the whole field.

"He's a massive horse and very, very heavy which is why he was only ยฃ15,000. He's improving with every run and I felt there should be more in him.

"He's obviously got a lot of ability as he doesn't know what he's here for yet really. This horse hasn't had a gallop since before his first run and we do them on the racecourse."

Sky Bet make him 16/1 for the 2000 Guineas next spring.

1434: Make that 160! Mark Johnston's colt blasts from last to first inside the final couple of furlongs to win going away in the Vintage Stakes.

Can't imagine that kind of race was by design, but De Sousa must have been quite happy with how quickly they were going up front after he fluffed the start a bit and despite having to wait for a run, the horse came widest of all to win by a length and three quarters from Alan King's Dunkerron.

RESULT - Goodwood 2.25

1st Dark Vision (100/30 favourite)

2nd Dunkerron (9/1)

3rd Confiding (8/1)

1420: There's a clear market drift here and that is the once-raced Confiding. Perhaps he didn't want the rain, perhaps he got out of the wrong side of the bed.

Dark Vision remains really strong at the head of the betting under Silvestre De Sousa, who will be hoping for a better start than he got on Medrano in the first.

Others for money include Cosmic Law and Junius Brutus on his first run for Ralph Beckett after he ran for French handler Matthieu Palussiere at Royal Ascot.

1418: The world is watching - hold on, isn't that Ascot's strapline?

1412: Next up on the Sussex Downs is the Group Two Vintage Stakes and Johnston has another two-year-old at the top of the market here.

Dark Vision is 100/30 with Sky Bet, with the first paying four places instead of three (1/5 odds) providing 10 run.

Yorkshire rival Richard Fahey saddles Coventry Stakes ninth Cosmic Law and the trainer gave us his thoughts in his regular column.

1408: Meanwhile, Arctic Sound (7/4 favourite) bolts up in the first at Beverley for Mark Johnston under Franny Norton. It must be a while since Norton hasn't appeared on day one at Goodwood.

That's Johnston's 159th winner of the calendar year. He needs 17 more to beat Richard Hannon's all-time winners record of 4,145. Quite remarkable.

Presumably the aim was to break that record this week, but it does seem highly unlikely despite all bar the stable cat being entered up at least once.

1405: The red-hot Haggas also has two runners in the Goodwood Cup at 3.35 and he sounded relatively positive over the claims of Dal Harraild who sports first-time blinkers in the big one.

1400: Haggas, who also saddled the third Original Choice, told Racing UK: "He's just grown up a lot. He had a very high testicle last year and it took a while for us to sort it out. He's an improved horse this time.

"He does pull up a bit in front but he didn't do so today. He'll probably go to York now as he likes northern air - like his trainer. We toyed with a mile and a half last year but I think we'll stick to this trip for now."

1355: A strong start for favourite backers as 13/2 jolly Alfarris delivers for William Haggas. As ever in these Goodwood handicaps, there were a couple of serious hard-luck stories, including Not So Sleepy who appeared to finish with a handful of rein under Adam Kirby, but Alfarris was well on top at the line.

Medrano missed the kick and was up against it from that point while Rainbow Rebel finished just outside of the places but was far from disgraced from stall 14.

RESULT - Goodwood 1.50

1st Alfarris (13/2 fav)

2nd Plutonian (20/1)

3rd Original Choice (9/1)

4th Afaak (8/1)

1340: Here's the aforementioned Pivoine gleaming in the summer sun. He weakened into fourth at Sandown last time but was in front two out and may find this less demanding track more to his liking.

1330: Nothing says Goodwood like a mauve suit jacket and a panama.

1320: We're half an hour from the opening 10-furlong handicap, in which it's MONEY BACK as a free bet with Sky Bet if your selection loses.

You can take advantage of this fabulous offer right here.

As for who we think will be winning, Mike Cattermole has gone for Alfarris who represents William Haggas and Jim Crowley. The four-year-old has gone up 2lb for being beaten at Sandown but he only just missed out there and generally looks on an upward curve.

Dark Red 'won' this race last year before being disqualified and placed second following a Stewards' Enquiry, which produced this moment when Ryan Moore suggested Oisin Murphy wasn't strong enough to cope with his horse before a rare public giggle.

Today Murphy rides Pivoine for Andrew Balding in the race. Moore has to wait until Van Beethoven in the second for his first ride of the day.

1305: The Qatar Vintage Stakes and the Qatar Lennox Stakes both carry Group Two status and offer excellent support to the day's main race and the unbeaten Dark Vision is a popular favourite in the former. He's unbeaten from two starts for Mark Johnston and given he's by Dream Ahead there's a pretty strong chance he'll be happy on ground with a little more ease than he's raced on so far.

1250: You're either with or against Stradivarius in the Goodwood Cup today and there must be a temptation to take him on at such skinny prices. He's been beaten on all four starts including the word Soft in the going description and although we've just avoided that today, the slight easing of the ground has to be considered more or a negative than a positive for John Gosden's charge.

The trends also suggest he could be one to take one... Click on the image below for the Bettrends selection.

1240: If you aren't familiar with Ben Linfoot's Value Bet column then it's time you were initiated. He pores over the form in detail so you don't need to take five hours out of your working day to try and find an edge.

Forget whispers from the dentist or bankers for your mate's mate's uncle, and follow Ben's advice, which has proved hugely successful over the years. Luckily, he's also mad keen on weeding out winners during Goodwood week and his first selection runs in the opening race in a little over an hour's time.

1230: With such an idiosyncratic track make-up and the perfect blend of massive handicaps and quality stakes races, Goodwood is a magnificent week for many punters and there are some interesting gambles developing today.

Sky Bet's main market movers for all of today's meetings can be found here and the biggest ones at Goodwood include El Astronaute in the sprint handicap - a race he won 12 months ago - and Mark Johnston's newcomer Gainsborough Hat in the six furlong maiden.

As for the feature Qatar Goodwood Cup due off at 3.35, million pound bonus seeker Stradivarius remains odds-on across the board at 8/11 generally but there's plenty of support for second-favourite Torcedor.

If you can't see past the Gold Cup winner getting the job done easily, Sky Bet have enhanced him to 5/2 from 2/1 to prevail by three lengths or more - place your bets right here.

1215: Afternoon all and welcome to our live coverage of Glorious Goodwood, which - believe it or nor - will begin on Good ground (it's potentially a little slower than that on parts of the straight according to some) following 5mm of rain overnight.

After the complete washout last year (who could forget the scenes after a drenched Sussex Stakes?), we're thankfully looking at some fine weather now for the remainder of the week and presumably course officially won't mind a spot of 'natural watering' before temperatures rise again from Thursday into the weekend.

Ed Arkell, clerk of the Course and officiating at his first Qatar Goodwood Festival after taking over from Seamus Buckley, said: "The rain this morning stopped by 5am - we thought we might get a bit more but it did not materialise which was great. We had been expecting a shower overnight, possibly 1 or 2 millimetres, but we got almost five. It is now warm and breezy.

"All the good to firm bits on the round course have gone and it is Good, with the last three and a half furlongs of the straight course being a bit easier.

"We stopped watering on Saturday when it was nailed on that we would get heavy rain on Sunday. We have been so run around by forecasts that say rain is going to fall and it doesn't come!

"We are starting off on ideal ground conditions in view of the forecast temperatures - up to very high 20s Celsius and even 30s on Saturday."
