Power alternative to Guineas favourite

Native Trail, the unbeaten favourite for Saturday's Qipco 2000 Guineas at Newmarket is difficult to oppose given his outstanding performances in all five career starts but, in what could prove a good renewal of the all-important Classic, this massive colt will be too short in the betting for many punters.

Two victories on the Rowley Mile course in the Dewhurst Stakes last October and in the Craven Stakes on his reappearance, along with a convincing defeat of the re-opposing Point Lonsdale in the National Stakes at The Curragh suggests that the son of Oasis Dream is going to take plenty of beating.

But odds of around even money, and maybe even odds-on at the off, are hardly attractive, and it's also possible that stall 15 on the wing (stands side) might not be ideal should there be any track bias as Native Trail is drawn well away from potential dangers such as his stable companion Coroebus (in stall one) and Aidan O'Brien's number one contender Luxembourg (in stall four).

Also drawn low (in three) is PERFECT POWER who has done next to nothing wrong in his career so far and, at a more attractive price, could be the one that Native Trail has to beat.

A strong finisher in all his races last season when successful in the Norfolk Stakes, the Prix Morny and the Middle Park Stakes on this course, Richard Fahey's son of Ardad made an excellent reappearance when beating Lusail in a fast-run Greenham Stakes over seven furlongs.

Many will question whether he will stay a mile, especially as his promising sire was a smart sprinting juvenile, but it is early days to say that Ardad cannot breed horses that stay further, and Perfect Power's dam won over a mile and a quarter.

On his running style, the selection has every chance of getting the trip in my opinion, and connections will try to ensure that he is more relaxed going to the start on Saturday after almost running away with Christophe Soumillon on the way to post at Newbury.

Once the race is on, Perfect Power races like a complete professional, switches off and then produces an excellent change of gear when it matters. He has all the credentials to shake up the favourite, providing the trip is not just beyond him.

Of the aforementioned dangers, I wonder if both Luxembourg (by Camelot), a soft ground winner of the Vertem Futurity at Doncaster, and Point Lonsdale (by Australia and a full brother to the smart middle distance runner Broome) are just too stoutly bred to be quick enough while Coroebus, an undoubtedly promising colt, probably has a bit to find as his Group Three Autumn Stakes win over the course and distance last October hasn't been boosted by those behind him.

O'Meara veteran can roll back the years

Earlier, that grand old stager SUMMERGHAND can land the My Odds Boost On Betfair Handicap.

The David O'Meara-trained eight-year-old has been a wonderful stable servant but, not for the first time, failed to shine in Dubai earlier this year whereas he has produced some of his best form at Newmarket (on both courses) including when beating Oxted and Emaraaty Ana in the Abernant Stakes over this Rowley Mile six furlongs just over a year ago.

A reproduction of that performance will surely see Summerghand bang there at the finish having been dropped 6lb since finishing eighth in the Ayr Gold Cup last September, and he is now 2lb lower in the ratings compared to his Stewards Cup-winning mark two years ago.

Finally, the lightly-raced INGRA TOR looks potentially well-treated in the concluding Betfair Weighed-In Podcast Handicap for three-year-olds.

After just three outings, this will be a test of the Mick Channon-trained colt's inexperience but his neck second to the 50/1 outsider Nationwide at Kempton earlier in the month, having previously landed a novice event at Southwell, was a lot better than it might have looked.

The year older Nationwide has since followed up comfortably at Wolverhampton earning a rating of 83 which, considering the selection was conceding 2lb under a penalty and was considerably worse off taking weight for age into account at Kempton, suggests he could be well in here off 82.

Of course, one can never be sure if all-weather form will be repeated on turf but it is worth noting that Ingra Tor's dam Kassia (also trained by Channon) won a listed race over this course and distance.
