With the exception of the Listed race I suppose you'd say today's Curragh card is more of an 'industry' day but it's an interesting card in some respects with a bit of an end-of-season feel to it.
A lot of them are maidens and having had chances but I've three each-way fancies at what could prove to be value prices.
In the first race, the favourite Rosie Bassett is the obvious one following a fair debut second. However, she wears a hood and seems to get a little bit buzzed up in the preliminaries and I personally thought she had quite a hard race first time out.
On paper, dropping to five furlongs should be very suitable but I don't know how mentally or physically robust she'd be. On that I think she's opposable at the odds and I AM MAGNETIC is the one I like at 5/1.
He - along with the favourite to be honest - has a high draw so they could end up having it between them, and he's run four good races in maiden company this year. He was slightly unlucky in Tipperary, he just got impeded at the wrong time and lost a bit of momentum before finishing quite well in the first-time visor.
The stiffer, fast-run five up the Curragh should suit him well and while I'd prefer if the trainer was going a little better, he has been consistent and I'm not too keen on anything else in the race.
The second race is the feature and Make A Challenge is bounced back into Listed company after coming up just short in a couple of Group 1s. However, they've been quite tough runs including a trip to France so he's another I'm happy enough to oppose at a skinny price.
It's open if you take him out of it and ROMANTIC PROPOSAL is the one I'm with. She did very well to win a premier handicap at the Curragh, when just leading on the post, and she was tried in Listed company when four lengths behind Make A Challenge at the Curragh, where she didn’t get the best of runs through on that occasion.
She ran extremely well here back at top handicap company when on the wrong side of the track behind Mr Lupton and then in Group 3 company, against similar opposition to today, she travelled best and found herself in front too soon, just getting run out of it late on.
She’s a filly on the upgrade and with a more conservative ride, I think she's a solid each-way proposition.
The one I like the most is HELL LEFT LOOSE in the big sprint handicap at 2.05. He's had a very productive year already, winning three, and is very effective with cut in the ground. He got badly checked after a furlong or so at Listowel the last day but the ground was good there anyway and I'm not sure he showed his true form.
Back on a straight track today, and back on soft ground, I think there's a lot more upside to this horse still, especially considering he's only had the six runs for current trainer Denis Hogan. At 8/1 with a few firms paying down to five places I really like his claims.
