3.05 Ayr

The evidence from day one of the Ayr Gold Cup Festival was that those drawn high on the straight course were at a disadvantage and I’d expect that to be the case again, which rather counts against Coto de Caza in the Listed dash, with the Crisfords’ filly drawn widest of all in stall 14.

Better drawn in the middle is UNCLE DON who hasn’t been seen for 11 weeks but looked a useful prospect when slamming Big Mojo at Beverley on just his second start.

The runner-up was making his debut, and that needs to be factored in, but he went on to win the Molecomb Stakes just a few weeks later and was an excellent second in the Group 2 Flying Childers at Doncaster last week, so Uncle Don deserves plenty of credit for beating him the guts of three lengths on the Westwood.

Uncle Don finished second to Big Cyril at Ayr on debut and that form also took a boost when third-placed Eve’s Boy won here yesterday on the back of an absence.

Given the way both of his previous races have worked out, Uncle Don looks worth a bet here, and it’s encouraging that his stable tends to do well at this fixture.

3.40 Ayr

There aren’t many who can be fancied in this Listed sprint over the rarely used 5½f trip, and one of those, Woodhay Wonder has the worst of the draw, so it’s easy to narrow things down, and FROST AT DAWN is taken to bounce back from a below-par run in the Nunthorpe where she had valid excuses.

Biting off a bit more than she could chew at York, she was also running for the first time this season, with her previous 2024 runs coming at Meydan. The best of those saw her win the Group 3 Nad Al Sheba Turf Sprint over 5f.

Frost At Dawn was poorly drawn in the Nunthorpe to add to her woes but still finished alongside Azure Blue who had a much better position, and she ought to have little trouble turning the tables with that run behind her.

She only made her debut last autumn and it would be folly to assume her progress has stopped after a couple of tough tasks in Group 1 company.

4.15 Ayr

Although she ran and won yesterday, I would still expect ETERNAL SUNSHINE to turn out again, and that’s a clever bit of placing from Jim Goldie as his progressive filly is only 4lb higher despite picking up a double penalty for this early-closing event (rated 65 when the race closed and has won at Musselburgh and here subsequently).

She was handed a very lenient opening mark, largely because Goldie had the gall to run her in a 1½m seller on her second start, and she has been an absolute revelation since racing over 5f/6f this summer, winning four times and finishing second twice.

The first of those wins came in a lowly 0-50 classified stakes contest and she has continued to thrive since, albeit never inclined to win too far.

Despite this being a Class 2 contest on paper, it’s not much better than a 0-75 and she had a fair bit up her sleeve when beating Sugar Hill Babe on Thursday.
