2.20 Southwell

Only the five runners but a decent pace assured with both Flash In The Park and Dr Kananga in the field, both of who will go forward. This represents a big step up in trip for Flash In The Park, and chances are he’ll not stay, despite being a point winner.

Dr Kananga is very well treated these days and wasn’t beaten far by Mr Vango at Sandown back in December, so must have a good chance of making all in easier company here. Cheekpieces went back on last time he ran respectably given he may well have needed the run after a short break.

Impatient is inconsistent and threw it in too quickly at Leicester for comfort. His Ffos Las win the time before hasn’t worked out at all, and he’s opposable, as is Ali Star Bert, who is very reliable around here but handicapped to the hilt. Ultra Beat gets a visor for the first time which could help, and can be forgiven a poor effort in heavy ground last time, so may be the danger to the selection.

3.30 Southwell

I’m inclined to oppose Jack Hyde here, mainly on the grounds that he isn’t really improving and has stamina to prove over 2½m on watered ground.

Both Escapologist and MONACO RULES have already shown they stay, and Monaco Rules has plenty more improvement to come after a third at Newcastle last time which is working out well with the fourth a winner next time out and the winner and second both running well in defeat since. He’s my idea of the winner.

4.05 Southwell

The proven one here is Alexandra Larose, a ready winner at Huntingdon last month, that coming off the back of a narrow defeat, and she’s clearly going the right way. The Huntingdon form isn’t great - second well beaten next time, so she might need a bit more from a 7lb higher mark, but at least she knows where the winning line is.

We like two at likely bigger prices. MY DREAM was a close fifth in a maiden hurdle here last June, not a bad race for the time of year, and would likely have needed her run here last time out after the best part of nine months off. Tabitha Worsley finds herself replaced by Sean Bowen for her handicap debut today, and Sarah Humphrey recently had a handicap debut winner here - also ridden for the first time by Bowen.

I didn’t mind Heather Honey on looks at Market Rasen last time but she found the 2m trip inadequate and she was flat out pretty much the whole way around. She gets another four furlongs here, which can only help given she’s out of a half-sister to that good three-miler Master Malt; I’d not be shocked if she ran much better here either, and she is worth monitoring in the market as a result.
