Cheltenham Festival trainer quotes for Friday including the Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup

1.30 JCB Triumph Hurdle

Click here for full racecard and free video form

Fil Dor and Pied Piper give trainer Gordon Elliott a formidable hand in his bid for a third victory in the JCB Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham.

It is eight years since the Cullentra handler first landed the juvenile championship with the great Tiger Roll and he doubled his tally with Farclas in 2018.

This year’s two challengers both carry Andrew and Gemma Brown’s Caldwell Construction colours – and both line up with strong claims.

Joey Logan, racing manager to the owners, said: “It’s very exciting to have the two of them running in the Triumph Hurdle, obviously.”

Pied Piper was bred by the Queen and initially trained on the Flat by John Gosden before changing hands in the autumn.

On his hurdling debut at Punchestown, he narrowly defeated the Willie Mullins-trained Vauban before registering a runaway victory in a Triumph Hurdle Trial at Cheltenham in late January.

Fil Dor has also locked horns with Vauban already, with the Mullins runner ending his three-race winning streak at last month’s Dublin Racing Festival.

The trio will again do battle in Friday’s opener and Logan has high hopes for the Caldwell pair.

“Willie is talking up his horse a lot, which you have to respect, but I think the course on Friday is going to suit Fil Dor fantastically well,” he added.

“He worked in Leopardstown last week and worked very well under Davy (Russell). Pied Piper has won over the course and distance and also seems in great nick, so it’s hard to split them to be honest.

“Everyone is saying Willie’s horse has improved, but I know for a fact Pied Piper has improved phenomenally since that run (when he beat Vauban). I think it’s going to be a very good race and I’m expecting a big run from both of our horses.”

Vauban won twice on the Flat in France before joining Mullins’ stable last year.

He was odds-on for his Irish debut when touched off by Pied Piper, but readily accounted for Fil Dor in the Spring Juvenile Hurdle.

“He did everything right the last day. He jumps well and everything has gone well since, so he’s going to be a major player,” Mullins said.

“He obviously met a good one the first day.”

The Closutton handler also saddles Icare Allen and Il Etait Temps, both of whom finished behind Vauban at Leopardstown in early February, although Icare Allen has won since.

Among the leading hopes for the home team is the Milton Harris-trained Knight Salute, who is five from five since being sent hurdling, including a Cheltenham victory in November.

Harris said: “He’s in a good place and worked well last Saturday, so we’re looking forward to it. The Irish are either too good for us or they’re not as good as they think they are. There doesn’t seem to be much between them, so we’ll see.

“Our horse is very adaptable and if he goes there, he goes there as a contender. Win, lose or draw he’s had a great season, but this would obviously be the icing on the cake. We’re under no illusions, it’s not going to be easy, but I don’t think he’ll make it easy for the others either.

But he cautioned: “We will keep our eye on the ground, though, after Wednesday’s rain. I am of the view that he is a better horse on better ground. We will have a chat with the owner after racing on Thursday. The ground could end up being quite sticky if it starts to dry up.”

Dan Skelton’s Doctor Parnassus, another ex-Flat performer, has won by 10 lengths at Ascot and nine at Taunton since being sent hurdling.

“He’s a half-brother to Metier and we all know what he’s done over hurdles,” said Skelton.

“This horse won at Ascot and we then ran him over two miles and three (furlongs) at Taunton deliberately, as you can’t be frightened of stamina if you’re going to run in a Triumph Hurdle. I was stood down at the last that day and I was amazed by how well he picked up and powered through the line. He doesn’t do anything flashy, but he’s a grafter and I think you need a grafter for a Triumph.”

Gary Moore runs the high-class Grade One winner Porticello and the maiden Teddy Blue, who was runner-up to Knight Salute in the Adonis Hurdle at Kempton three weeks ago.

2.50 Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle

Archie Watson, who is more accustomed to training winners on the Flat, rolls the dice with Stag Horn in the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham on Friday.

The Lambourn handler has a 29 per cent strike-rate over jumps this winter and Stag Horn has won both his starts over hurdles, at Hereford and in Grade Two company at Warwick.

Now he takes on the Irish battalion in the three-mile Grade One with the five-year-old, who is bred to win a Derby, being by Golden Horn out of a Galileo mare.

“It was probably last summer that the idea of hurdling came about,” said Watson. “It became apparent at Pontefract the previous October that he wanted a trip. He ran in the Queen Alexandra at Royal Ascot which really suited him and he finished fourth.

“Speaking to his owners, they were very happy to give it a go over hurdles to see if he could be a high-class animal over an obstacle and so far it has been amazing really. We sent him down to Henrietta Knight’s and she did all the preliminary jumping with him. She loved him. He took to it very naturally, which isn’t particularly usual for a Flat horse going hurdling.

“I’ve always felt Stag Horn wants three miles, so hopefully he will take another step forward upped in trip in the Albert Bartlett. If he jumps as well as we know he can, I hope he can put a bit of pressure on the others.”

John O’Connell runs both Bardenstown Lad, who has won four of his last five over hurdles, and Mahler Mission, who landed the Grade Two River Don Novices’ Hurdle at Doncaster last time.

Both horses are on a hat-trick for the County Meath handler, who said: “Bardenstown Lad is going there in great form and obviously he is a fresh horse. He hasn’t had a hard winter campaign.

“It is a very open race and you will need a lot of luck in running, but we couldn’t be happier with him. The other horse, Mahler Mission, isn’t out of it, either. He is rated 1lb higher than Bardenstown, having won the River Don. We have two chances who deserve to be there.”

Bardenstown Lad won a novice hurdle over course and distance in October and has had just one run since, taking a three-runner affair at Musselburgh early last month.

“Bardenstown winning at Cheltenham is a big factor,” added O’Connell. “That was one of the reasons we took him there, as we wanted to give him some course experience as we have always had this race in mind for him. I wouldn’t swap him in the race, anyway.

“Mahler has bundles of stamina and that is what you need for this race, so he will be interesting as well.”

Henry Daly took a while before making a decision on whether Hillcrest would line up in the shorter Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle or this three-mile contest. The towering seven-year-old, who is the highest-rated British runner, won a extended three-mile Grade Two at Haydock last time.

Daly said: “It was fairly obvious after his win at Haydock that he got the three miles, so he should get the same trip at Cheltenham. He’s won over two and a half there, but this looked like the obvious race.

“He is in good form and schooled well last week. It is a tough race but it is a Grade One, so deserves to be.”

The Gordon Elliott-trained Ginto is well fancied, having won all three of his starts over hurdles including a Grade One at Naas last time.

The Irish challenge is a strong one, with Willie Mullins saddling a quartet, who include Minella Cocooner, the mount of Paul Townend, and The Nice Guy, who will be ridden for the first time by Sean O’Keeffe.

Seven-year-old The Nice Guy has won two bumpers and scored on his first run over hurdles with ease at Naas last time.

Mullins said: “He’s a horse that’s surprised me. At home I couldn’t get that type of feeling that he could win one bumper, never mind two, and then win a hurdle very easily. He’s not a big, strong, three-mile chaser to look at, but the way he jumps, I think he’s going to be a nice chaser. I’m very happy with his progress."

3.30 Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup

Click here for full racecard and free video form

Twelve months on from what was the culmination of a week Henry de Bromhead will never forget, Minella Indo and A Plus Tard are back in contention for top honours in the Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup.

Minella Indo and Jack Kennedy denied A Plus Tard and Rachael Blackmore 12 months ago as the pair put the seal on a dream four days for everyone concerned with De Bromhead’s County Waterford yard.

This season Minella Indo began his campaign in the Champion Chase at Down Royal and was beaten into third by Frodon, after which he was pulled up when never looking happy in the King George at Kempton.

However, there was far more encouragement to be taken from his runner-up finish behind Conflated in last month’s Irish Gold Cup at Leopardstown.

“Indo’s first run was really good on a sharp track and then, when we went to Kempton, I was trying to put a square peg into a round hole and that just didn’t work,” said De Bromhead.

“It was great to see him back in the Irish Gold Cup and I thought that was a really good run.”

Blackmore has again sided with A Plus Tard, who was a runaway winner of the Betfair Chase at Haydock in November before being chinned late on by Galvin in his bid for back-to-back wins in the Savills Chase.

Minella Indo is partnered this time by Robbie Power.

De Bromhead added: “A Plus Tard was really impressive in the Betfair Chase at Haydock and he ran well in the Savills. I was a little disappointed to get beaten, but still felt he ran really well.

“I’d say you could argue the Savills is the best form, when he was beaten by Galvin.

“I thought he was really impressive at Haydock and I thought he ran really well at Leopardstown.”

Richard Thompson, of owners Cheveley Park Stud, is hopeful A Plus Tard can go one better than 12 months ago, saying: “We’ve got a good jockey, a good trainer and a good horse.

“He has a very good record at Cheltenham – he’s finished first, third and second, so he’s a proven Cheltenham performer. He’s got a hell of a CV and we think he’s got the stamina, the class and the acceleration.

“We just hope we get the run of the race and we’ll see what happens.”

Gordon Elliott’s Galvin is another who has already proven his liking for the Cheltenham track having won twice at Prestbury Park, including a victory in the National Hunt Chase at last year’s Festival.

That race is more likely to produce a Grand National contender than a Gold Cup hope and those were the expectations held by Elliott – but the Ronnie Bartlett-owned gelding has shown his class with his Down Royal Champion Chase second and Savills Chase victory since.

“It’s a big bonus he’s been round Cheltenham and handles the track,” Elliott said.

“There’s a question mark about every horse in the race and it looks very open. He’s been working well with a few sharper horses of late, we’re really happy with him.

“If you see any negative with Galvin, you question whether he’s that class of a horse. I told Jamie (Codd) to hunt him round in the north (Down Royal) as we weren’t sure he was that class, but in Leopardstown he outstayed A Plus Tard.

“I think he has improved. At the start of the year I thought he was going to be more a Grand National horse, but he’s improving week in, week out. He’s going to have to improve again to win a Gold Cup, but I just think he’s going into the race with a really good profile – you know he stays, you know he likes the track.”

Al Boum Photo already has two Gold Cups in the bag following back-to-back wins in 2019 and 2020.

He had to make do with minor honours in third behind the De Bromhead pair in his hat-trick bid last year and returns off a familiar preparation – a solitary New Year’s Day win at Tramore.

Jockey Paul Townend told Ladbrokes: “Al Boum Photo wears cheek pieces for the first time. We schooled him with them and thought they made him concentrate a bit more. I think he is overpriced and he was not far behind the other two last year.

“He seems in great form coming here this year. He’s not getting any younger, but he has no miles on the clock and I am really looking forward to having another go and trying to regain the Gold Cup on him.”

The Festival’s most successful trainer has a second string to his bow in the form of Tornado Flyer, who has been kept fresh since his surprise King George triumph on Boxing Day.

“Coming home from Kempton we were happy to go straight to the Gold Cup. I wasn’t bothered about another run and and his owners weren’t either,” Mullins added.

“He did everything right in the King George, so we said we’d give him a chance to do it in Cheltenham. He hasn’t had any setbacks or anything.”

Nicky Henderson’s Chantry House took the Marsh Novices’ Chase at the Festival last year – and though he disappointed when pulled up in the King George, he bounced back in an attritional Cotswold Chase at Cheltenham in January.

“He wasn’t earth-shattering last time out, but we have reason to think we have got a little bit up our sleeve,” said the Seven Barrows trainer.

“If you go back, he hadn’t really had a race since Aintree (last season). He had a solo spin in a two-horse race around Sandown and the King George didn’t work at all. Nothing has absolutely jumped off the front page and stamped his authority on the Gold Cup, so it is up for grabs. It is an intriguing race and you could make a case for a lot of horses.”

The shortest-priced British hope is Dan Skelton’s Protektorat, a 25-length winner of the Many Clouds Chase at Aintree when last seen in December.

“We made the decision immediately in our own heads after Aintree that we were going to go straight to the Gold Cup,” the Alcester trainer said.

“We always thought he’d develop into a three-mile chaser, but I am surprised he’s the shortest-priced English runner in a Gold Cup this early on in his life. But he’s just got better and better and grown and matured, and got the hang of things.”

Best of the rest

Imperial Cup winner Suprise Package, who barely turned a hair when scoring by nine lengths at Sandown on Saturday, carries 5lb extra in another hugely competitive renewal of the McCoy Contractors County Handicap Hurdle.

Kevin Sexton renews the partnership with the Paul Leech-owned six-year-old, with James Bowen having deputised last weekend.

His trainer, Peter Fahey, said: “He is in great form and seems to have come out of the race really well. Nicola, who looks after him, is very happy with him.

“He did the job really well and it was a great performance on the day, but this looks a tougher race – although I wouldn’t be swapping him for anything!”

While there is no bonus for the Imperial Cup winner should he follow up in any race at Cheltenham this year, Brian Ellison hopes Cormier can strike for the north and pick up £100,000 cheque after scoring in the Morebattle Hurdle at Kelso 13 days ago.

“He’s in good form and he has taken his last run well,” said Ellison.

“He likes the course and won there in January, so is well worthy of his place. He has to run because of that hundred-grand bonus, doesn’t he? He has schooled well and we’re looking forward to it.”

The unexposed State Man, who fell two out on his debut for Mullins at Leopardstown on Boxing Day, but bounced back to score by a wide margin at Limerick, tops the market.

Top Bandit, who took a course and distance maiden in October and is seeking a fourth consecutive success, heads a strong team for Elliott, while the British challenge is spearheaded by Greatwood Handicap Hurdle winner West Cork, trained by Dan Skelton, and Nigel Twiston-Davies’ I Like To Move It, who won over course and distance in November.

Runner-up in the Grade Two Kennel Gate at Ascot, Colonel Mustard represents Lorna Fowler, who felt he had a hard race when subsequently third to Sir Gerhard in a Grade One at Leopardstown last month.

“He tried so hard,” said Fowler. “The way he has matured this season has been unbelievable. He just gave it everything on ground he didn’t really like.

“He was quite tired afterwards, so we gave him plenty of time to recover and he seems to have come back to himself really well. Hopefully he will be going there on his A game. There are plenty to beat, but we will have a go, anyway. I hope he would have every chance.”
