A dual Grade 1 winner, Gamine came up short over 1m1f at Churchill Downs last time. She’ll prove popular back over today’s trip but will be taken on for the lead by Serengeti Empress, who landed a Grade 1 at Saratoga with Come Dancing behind before coming out second-best in a fight to the line with Bell's The One at Churchill Downs. The latter will be closing at the finish again but that comment also applies to SPEECH, who messed up the start behind Gamine last time but beat subsequent Grade 2 winner Venetian Harbor three lengths when winning at the highest level here before that and is fancied to make another bold bid today.

Glass Slippers was unable to repeat last year’s Prix de l’Abbaye success at Longchamp last month. She beat today’s reserve Equilateral when landing the Flying Five at the Curragh before that but Kevin Ryan’s filly faces a different test in this open renewal. Most of the home sprinters are old foes with Got Stormy beating Into Mystic a nose here last month and Imprimis getting the better of Front Run The Fed and Bombard at Kentucky Downs when the latter pair dead-heated for second. Leinster beat Extravagant Kid with Just Might further behind over track and trip recently and has every chance but a speculative vote goes to OLEKSANDRA. She’s been hard to keep right having had just the seven outings so far but Neil Drysdale’s mare is a smart sprinter on her day and won a Grade 1 at Belmont in June with Texas Wedge back in third.

Complexity warmed up nicely for this with a Grade 2 victory at Belmont and looks sure to figure. Knicks Go has been winning low-key races as he liked but faces a much tougher test today and so does stablemate Owendale. Art Collector beat Rushie in a Grade 2 here during the summer but disappointed in the Preakness last month so a chance is taken on the 2019 Preakness winner WAR OF WILL. Mark Casse’s colt won a Grade 1 contest on the Turf track here in July and reverts to Dirt on the back of a third in the Woodbine Mile. Sharp Samurai and Mr Freeze are mostly consistent at a lower level but have so far come up short in this grade.

Irish 1000 Guineas winner Peaceful has to put a below-par effort at Newmarket behind her but was beaten only a neck in the French Oaks and is closely matched with Terebellum on collateral form. The latter won a Group 2 at Newmarket the last time she raced over 1m2f and is preferred to Cayenne Pepper and James Fanshawe’s filly Audarya. Chad Brown has won this four times in the past, including with Sistercharlie in 2018, though the latter was no match for stablemate RUSHING FALL (NAP) in a Grade 1 at Saratoga last time. The selection also beat the front-running Mean Mary on that occasion with subsequent Woodbine Mile winner Starship Jubilee further behind and should go close on the strength of that form. Harvey's Lil Goil takes on older horses after landing a Grade 1 contest here last month but Civil Union beat both My Sister Nat and Nay Lady Nay in the Flower Bowl at Belmont recently, though this looks tougher.

Peter Miller has won this twice with Roy H in recent years and his C Z Rocket arrives on the back of Grade 2 victories in California. Diamond Oops beat Empire Of Gold, with Echo Town and Whitmore further behind, in a Grade 2 here last time while Firenze Fire won the Vosburgh at Belmont in September but could only manage fifth in this last year. Yaupon represents last year’s winning yard having won all four outings so far but takes on older sprinters for the first time whereas FRANK’S ROCKETTE trounced older horses with a scorching display in a Grade 2 contest at Belmont last month. Bill Mott’s three-year-old filly looks well set for a return to this higher level on that evidence having held her own in Grade 1 company last year.

This looks wide open but 2000 Guineas winner KAMEKO returned to winning ways, despite carrying a penalty, in a Group 2 at Newmarket last time and Andrew Balding’s colt should give a good account. He needs to reverse earlier running in the Sussex Stakes with third-placed Irish 2000 Guineas winner Siskin and the runner-up Circus Maximus, though the latter could only manage fourth in this last year. Lope Y Fernandez and Safe Voyage look closely matched on the form book but may be better over 7f and the latter needs give in the ground. Chad Brown runs three including last year’s heroine Uni and Digital Age, who beat Factor This in a Grade 1 at Churchill Downs in September. But Raging Bull found Ivar too good in the Turf Mile over track and trip when the latter bounced back to form having won Grade 1 races in Argentina last year. Halladay won at the highest level for the first time at Saratoga in August with several of these behind.

MONOMOY GIRL ended 2018 with a victory in this contest at Churchill Downs but missed the whole of 2019. She’s returned to action in fine form winning all three starts so far this year, including a Grade 1 back at Churchill Downs last time when beating Lady Kate and Horologist. The latter has subsequently beaten both Point Of Honor and Dunbar Road but Swiss Skydiverlooks a bigger threat on her surprise victory in the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico last month. Harvest Moon is on the rise and takes a further step up in class after landing a Grade 2 at Santa Anita while Valiance beat Ollie's Candy in the Grade 1 Spinster Stakes over track and trip and can go well.

Aidan O’Brien has a good record in this and though Magical wasn’t quite at her best at Ascot last time she found only Enable too good in this back in 2018. She’s also preferred to the progressive Prix de l’Opera winner Tarnawa and finished in front of Lord North in the Juddmonte International at York earlier. Frankie prefers the latter to Mehdaayih but MOGUL is another Ballydoyle runner with every chance having beaten subsequent Arc runner-up In Swoop when landing a Group 1 in France last time under Pierre-Charles Boudot. Still improving, he may prove good enough in this. Channel Maker has been winning Grade 1 events and United finished runner-up in last year’s renewal, though was beaten by Red King at Del Mar in August. Arklow may struggle and German Group 1 winner Donjah will find the ground fast enough.

Bob Baffert has won three of the last six renewals and runs three this time. Improbable has notched up a hat-trick of Grade 1 victories this year and easily beat stablemate Maximum Security at Santa Anita last time. The third Baffert representative, Authentic, came up short in the Preakness last time having won the Kentucky Derby in September when TIZ THE LAW was second. The latter was coming off a big win at Saratoga when beaten in the Derby but has been rested for this and Barclay Tagg’s multiple Grade 1 winner should be right back to his best today. Tom's D'Etat stumbled leaving the stalls when third behind Improbable and By My Standards last time while Global Campaign beat Tacitus in a Grade 1 at Saratoga but last year’s third Higher Power and Title Ready have plenty to find.
