Breeders' Cup rest of review: Blue Prize beats Midnight Bisou in the Breeders' Cup Distaff; Belvoir Bay wins the Turf Sprint

Second Prize for Midnight Bisou

Blue Prize (9/1) pulled off one of the biggest shocks of the night when lowering the colours of hot-favourite Midnight Bisou in the Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff.

On the back of a brilliant campaign that had seen her arrive in Santa Anita with an unbeaten record through 2019, Midnight Bisou was seen by many as the banker of the meeting but she found herself behind early and, just has been the case all weekend on the dirt track, she wasn't able to make up the ground as Blue Prize got first run turning for home.

Despite being positioned further back than Midnight Bisou in the early stages of the race, Blue Prize was pushed up by jockey Joe Bravo just after halfway and it was to prove a race-winning move as she dug in gamely once hitting the front inside the final furlong.

Midnight Bisou closed well for second but could never land a telling blow while Serengeti Empress, who had cut out the early running, held on for third.

Belvoir Bay blitzes Sprint field

Belvoir Bay produced a scintillating display to go gate-to-wire for trainer Peter Miller in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint at Santa Anita.

A slow start for market leader Pure Sensation allowed Belvoir Bay (16/1) to tack across from stall 12 and grab the early lead and from there she went onto to produce one of the finest performances in recent Breeders' Cup history, setting scorching fractions throughout and leaving her rivals toiling in behind.

Jockey Javier Castellano was still sitting motionless as Belvoir Bay swung for home and she continued to pour it on in the home straight, only having to be nudged out under hands and heels riding in the final furlong to record a most convincing triumph.

In the process, Belvoir Bay broke the track record for the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint, covering the five-furlong trip in 54.83 seconds

For Miller, who won the race with Stormy Liberal in 2017 and 2018, it was to prove an emotional success with Om edging out Shekky Shebaz for second and securing a memorable 1-2 for the handler.

He said: "I trained her just the same as Stormy Liberal when he came back off a lay-off three years ago. She's as tough as nails, and when she made the lead I knew she'd be hard to get past."

Spun To Run dominated Dirt Mile

Spun To Run (8/1) went wire-to-wire under an inspired ride from Irad Ortiz Jr in the Big Ass Fans Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile.

Ortiz was keen to make use of his low draw and quickly manoeuvred Spun To Run to the front as heavy-favourite Omaha Beach broke a step slow from the gates and was forced to watch on from near the rear in the opening exchanges.

Ortiz still cut a confident figure as the pack tried to close heading into the far turn and although Blue Chipper briefly threatened to mount a serious challenge, Spun To Run shook him off before stretching clear in the closing stages, allowing Ortiz a celebratory punch to the air as the pair crossed the line.

Omaha Beach navigated his way through the traffic to run down Blue Chipper for second, running an honourable race in defeat, but he was no match for Spun To Run and a pumped-up Ortiz.

Mitole collars Shancelot for Sprint glory

Mitole (7/4 fav) pounced late to deny Shancelot victory in a pulsating renewal of the Breeders' Cup Sprint.

The ultra-consistent Mitole was expected to take up his customary position near the head of affairs but he couldn't live with Shancelot in the early stages as the latter blazed a trail after making a rapid start from the gates.

Ricardo Santana Jr was instead forced to sit off the strong pace aboard Mitole as Shancelot continued to pour it on out in front but the former began to make up stealthy progress as they entered the straight.

As Shancelot finally began to feel the pinch inside the final 200 yards, Mitole loomed large on his shoulder and his superior stamina proved decisive as he wore down the leader to get on top close home.

Shancelot held on for second with Whitmore filling the places.

Winning Trainer Steve Asmussen said: "His elite ability only comes along very rarely. We laid out a path which we felt was highlighted by the Met Mile.

"After that he regrouped and showed he was the fastest horse in the world today."

Covfefe toughs it out in F&M Sprint

Covfefe produced a classy display to win the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint for trainer Brad Cox.

Sent off the 2/1 joint-favourite on the back of a fine campaign that included Grade One success at Saratoga back in August, Covfefe was always in control once Joel Rosario had positioned his mount just behind the early pace following a slightly sluggish break from the gates.

Rosario made his move three wide just after halfway and Covfefe responded by sweeping into a three-length lead entering the straight, only for Bellafina - who had scraped paint throughout on the inside rail - to produce a sustained late charge once switched out for her run.

Nevertheless, she was never quite able to lay a glove on Covfefe who was punched out for a three-quarters of a length victory with Dawn The Destroyer beaten a fair way back in third.

Fellow market-leader Come Dancing was in trouble a long way out and proved a bitter disappointment.

Cox said: "It's a dream come true to saddle two winners at the Breeders' Cup and Covfefe dug deep there.

"She's a privilege to train, and just keeps getting better. Great for the owners and Joel Rosario, who was going back to back on her."
