Breaking It Down: Murt Khan picks Great Fighter at Ayr

Owner and professional punter Murt Khan hopes that with plenty of pace in the race at Ayr, today could be the day for Great Fighter.

Today's race in focus: 2.40 AYR - GREAT FIGHTER

The handicapper has given Azzuri a bit of the chance dropping him 6lb for his last run at Wincanton. With the stable flying and better ground that will surely suit him today he rightly is favourite at a best-priced 3/1.

My concern is that there are a few frontrunners on paper in here, including the likes of Fairlee Grey and Lycidas. Azzuri doesn't have to make it, but the race could be set up for a closer.

Ranjaan has been on the decline over the past couple of years but has been competitive in Ireland of late. He may see his race out better on this ground today and could be a very live contender.

G'Day Aussie has done well for his connections this season. He looks high enough in the weights but has conditions to suit.

The horse who has the most solid form this season for me is GREAT FIGHTER. He started running off a mark of 126 this season and has crept down to 116 over the past few months.

During this period he has run in some competitive events without disgracing himself. He finished third, beaten seven lengths by Project Bluebook, three starts back and followed that run finishing fourth to Diego Du Charmil in the Scottish County Hurdle. He has run on the all-weather since, running a bit below-par.

He should get a real pace to run at today. The visor replaces sheepskin cheekpieces and he's handicapped to go very close. Today could be his day and can he can be backed at 5/1.

Looking Back - Thursday, 3.50 Cheltenham

Upswing was given a beautiful ride from Aidan Coleman to follow up his recent victory at Ffos Las. He really is thriving at present and will be dangerous to oppose next time out.

Coologue showed zest from the front and he is one I want to stay on the right side of when dropping down in trip on a flatter track.

Our selection TALK OF THE SOUTH more or less halved in price as the afternoon progressed. Unfortunately he looked reluctant out the back of the field and his jumping was poor. He may need a break now after a long season.
