Fran Berry fancies a couple of horses at Navan on Friday evening including one trained by Jessica Harrington in the big handicap on the card.
TAURAN SHAMAN looks a good each-way bet at 7/1 in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF ‘Nasrullah’ Handicap at Navan this evening.
It’s a seriously competitive race, but with most firms going five places I’m happy to take an each-way punt on Jessica Harrington’s son of Shamardal.
He went off a ridiculous price at 5/2 for the Irish Lincoln but he didn’t run badly at all in seventh, beaten just over four lengths.
It appeared to me that he needed the run, possibly quite badly, as he looked to be going best two out before he faded late on.
The step up in trip tonight is very interesting and I hope the ground doesn’t deteriorate too much, but either way this horse has loads of upside and is bred to thrive over further.
Finally, Charles Byrnes can get the better of Gordon Elliott in the Bettystown Maiden at 8.15.
Both trainers are obviously better known for their exploits over jumps but they look set to dominate this two-mile maiden with two renowned hurdlers.
THOSEDAYSAREGONE looks the bet at 9/4, the Coral Cup third, as he made a great comeback over a mile and a half at Limerick just over two weeks ago, where he looked to be coming with a winning challenge before he was outpaced.
Maybe he just got tired late on, but given he’s the winner of a bumper he looks to have the pace for this and a step up in trip to two miles on the Flat should suit him really well.
He has a strong level of form, but the key is that recent run as he could have fitness on his side against the favourite, Felix Desjy, as a lot of Gordon’s seem to be needing a run and he hasn’t been seen for 430 days.
