Brian Meehan has won the Breeders’ Cup Turf on two previous occasions with Red Rocks in 2006 and Dangerous Midge in 2010 and can land a third with JAYAREBE. He runs in the same orange and white colours of Iraj Parvizi, who also owned Dangerous Midge, and this smart performer appeals as one who’s long had this race on the radar.

After winning on debut as a two-year-old he’s been asked plenty of questions and has largely applied himself with plenty of credit, particularly over the course of this season with more experience. He’s added a further three successes to his name – a Listed event at Newmarket, the Group 3 Hampton Court at Royal Ascot, and the Group 2 Prix Dollar at Longchamp.

In the last-named race he had subsequent Champion Stakes hero Anmaat in behind and prior to that ran second to Economics in the Group 2 Prix Guillaume d’Ornano at Deauville, so his form has plenty of substance.

It’s a deep contest and there’ll be no hiding place in the 13-runner field but with few miles on the clock and an upward profile, he’s also not one to be underestimated by his rivals.

The race immediately after the Turf is the Classic and all eyes are on City of Troy to find out whether he can become the first European winner of the race on dirt since 1993.

The big question is the surface and for me I can’t have him at the prices because of that.

Instead, I’m taken by one at a bigger price in ARTHUR’S RIDE. His draw isn’t too kind but he’s unlikely to be far away from the pace in a race where there isn’t exactly a ton of speed on paper.

His trainer Bill Mott has scored twice in this before, with the mighty Cigar in 1995 and Drosselmeyer in 2011, and isn’t one to pitch his runners in at the deep end without reason.

He’s clearly had his share of issues having only had three runs up to February of last year before being seen again this March. He was a wide-margin winner of an allowance optional claimer at Saratoga over today’s distance before repeating in the Whitney there in the mud.

He has to overcome a disappointing effort in the Jockey Club Gold Cup last out but he’s proven he can turn in a big effort on the speedfigures and looks worth a sporting wager at the odds.
