Leeds' Thomas Bishop second in World Triathlon Series

Great Britain's Thomas Bishop followed Jodie Stimpson's lead by claiming second place in the opening World Triathlon Series race of the season in Abu Dhabi.

The 25-year-old from Leeds took the silver medal behind five-time world champion Javier Gomez Noya of Spain (pictured).

On Friday Commonwealth champion Stimpson, who suffered an Achilles injury last summer that put paid to her hopes of challenging for the world title, came in second after being pipped in a sprint finish with New Zealand's Andrea Hewitt.

Bishop was not quite as close to Noya, but he led by a couple of seconds after the bike stage, only to eventually be beaten by 14 seconds at the end of a gruelling run.

Vincent Luis of France came in 23 seconds later to take bronze.

Double Olympic champion Alastair Brownlee and brother Jonny Brownlee both missed the opening race of the series.
