Day four report

Bryson DeChambeau birdied the last two holes to snatch victory at the John Deere Classic in Illinois and seal the last place in the field for next week's Open Championship.

One place at Royal Birkdale was on offer to the highest-placed player not already exempt, and a brilliant six-under-par back-nine 30 saw DeChambeau take it - as well as a first PGA Tour title and a winner's cheque for 1million US dollars.

Starting the final round four behind leader Patrick Rodgers, the 23-year-old's chances looked slim when he bogeyed the fourth.

However, a birdie from 11 feet on the eighth proved the catalyst for a spectacular inward nine which handed DeChambeau victory with a closing 65, giving him an 18 under total for the week at TPC Deere Run.

"I show everybody that, 'Look. There's plenty of ways to do it.' I do it my way and I feel comfortable doing it my way," DeChambeau told www.pgatour.com.

Rodgers, who crucially dropped a fourth shot of the day on the 17th, also had five birdies in a closing 70.

"Our tendency when you have the lead is to kind of hold on and play safe and guard against making mistakes. But I had guys coming at me with some really low rounds. Obviously Bryson shot a great one," said Rodgers.

Wesley Bryan (64) and Rick Lamb (66) were tied for third on 16 under.

Ireland's Seamus Power was tied for 25th after finishing with a 67, while English qualifier Sam Horsfield shot a closing 71 to finish down in a share of 55th.

Patrick Rodgers stands on the cusp of a first PGA Tour title after maintaining his two-shot advantage in the John Deere Classic.

The former world amateur number one, who attended the same college as Tiger Woods and compiled a similarly impressive record, carded a third-round 68 to move to 16-under on another day of low scoring at TPC Deere Run.

The 25-year-old made two bogeys - twice as many as he'd made in the opening two rounds - but a string of par saves over the closing holes ensured that he would keep the lead with which he had started the round.

Daniel Berger emerged as the biggest threat to Rodgers, the pre-tournament favourite climbing into a share of second thanks to a nine-birdie 63.

Berger, who played against Rodgers as an amateur, lost a play-off for the Travelers Championship to another former college opponent in Jordan Spieth recently, soon after he'd defended his title in the FedEx St Jude Classic.

As such he represents the in-form, class act on the leaderboard and, unlike Rodgers, does not have the added pressure of battling for one available place in the Open Championship having already secured his spot.

Alongside Berger on 14-under is Scott Stallings, who eagled the par-five 17th in a second successive 64. Stallings is a three-time PGA Tour winner, but it is three-and-a-half years since the most recent of those successes.

Bryson DeChambeau bogeyed the final hole on Saturday to leave Nicholas Lindheim along in fourth place, three back of Rodgers.

Day two report

Patrick Rodgers carded a second round 64 to establish a two-shot halfway lead at the John Deere Classic.

The 25-year-old American had eight birdies and a single bogey in his seven under par round, which left him 13 under for the week in Illinois.

That was two clear of Bryson DeChambeau, who signed for a 65, with two-time major winner Zach Johnson and overnight joint-leader Charles Howell III a shot further back in a tie for third at TPC Deere Run.

Rodgers, a former world amateur number one, matched Tiger Woods' Stamford University record of 11 wins during his college career but is yet to make his mark since turning professional in 2014.

Starting on the back nine, Rodgers carded birdies at the 14th and 16th from 17 and 13 feet before tapping in for another gain on the 17th.

A chip-in at the second and a 50-foot effort on the seventh were the highlights of five inward birdies, but Rodgers three-putted the ninth - his last - to drop his only shot of the day.

English qualifier Sam Horsfield, who began the day inside the top 10, toppled down the leaderboard with a two-over 73, although he was still the only European to make the cut. 

Day one report

Charles Howell III shot an eight-under-par 63 to hold a share of the first-round lead alongside Ollie Schniederjans at the John Deere Classic in Illinois.

American Howell is lloking to win his first US PGA Tour title for 10 years, but has been in good form this season with a couple oif runner-up finishes to his name.

The 35-year-old made eight birdies in a flawless round, the highlight of which was a 25-feet effort on the seventh.

Schniederjans, who finished 12th at the Open in 2015 as an amateur, had nine birdies but dropped a shot on the 18th after his approach came up short of the green.

Two-time major winner Zach Johnson, fellow Americans Patrick Rodgers and Chad Campbell and South Africa's Rory Sabbatini share third on six under.

England's Sam Horsfield, who came through qualifying to take his place in the field, is the leading European after a five-under 66 left him tied for seventh.
