Timo Werner to Liverpool: RB Leipzig striker praises Jurgen Klopp and says his style would suit a move to Anfield

Timo Werner continues to look destined to join Premier League leaders Liverpool this summer after yet again handing out more glowing praise to Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The RB Leipzig striker remains in red-hot form and followed up his penalty winner over Tottenham in the Champions League with another goal in his side’s 5-0 win against Schalke.

But it was his post-match comments about Liverpool that saw him move to 4/7 to move to Anfield this summer.

It was a 27th goal of the season for the 23-year-old, who has been linked with a move to Anfield over the last couple of transfer windows.

After his winner at Spurs, Werner spoke of his pride at being linked with “the best team in the world” and now he has again lavished praise on the Reds.

Werner saluted compatriot Klopp as the best manager in the world, and it what could be a telling remark he also described how Liverpool’s style of play would suit his game.

"Last year, until I extended my contract, it was always Bayern Munich [that I was linked with]. Now Liverpool has come up through the media and through our game in England," Werner told Sky Sports Germany.

"You have there the best coach in the world with Jurgen Klopp.

"There are many things that would suggest that my style of play might be a good fit, but I'm not worried about it because we have so much to do with Leipzig.

"You can see we won against Tottenham, but we also have a second leg. It's hard to think about where to play next year if you want to step on the gas here and now."

What exactly a deal for Werner would look like is something of a mystery, but it’s been widely reported that he has a buyout clause of around £50m that expires in April.

That could well be the reason why the player himself has decided to speak out about Liverpool now, in the hope of a move being made sooner rather than later – when Leipzig’s asking price could be far higher.

Timo Werner analysis

Werner is know for his goal scoring ability, but as the Bundesliga video below shows, the German forward is now improving his all around game and his willingness to play out wide will be of particular interest for Klopp.

The system at Liverpool shows no signs of changing and although Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah won't be moved in a hurry, they've played a lot of top-level football over the last couple of years.

Timo Werner - What Makes The RB Leipzig Speedster So Good?

All three played in international tournaments last summer, with Mane and Salah at the African Cup of Nations and Firmino at the Copa America, while all three have also suffered injuries this season and their involvement may need monitoring going forward.

Xherdan Shaqiri has not had the impact Klopp had hoped and while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain can play there, his best position may be in the midfield trio going forward.

Divock Origi has scored crucial goals but it's clear he's not at the elite level needed to be a regular stand-in, and with Werner crucially being able to score and assist with goals then he looks like he could slot in nicely anywhere along the front line.

Crucially, Firmino will again be off to yet another Copa America this summer while Mane and Salah could miss games in the crucial January and February period next season due to the African Cup of Nations moving.
