However that only tells half the story on a dramatic final evening in Sky Bet League One, as three teams finished on 50 points at the foot of the table.
Southend United looked doomed three minutes from time, as they were drawing with Sunderland, and Plymouth beating Scunthorpe 3-2. But Stephen Humphrys was the hero firing home on 87 minutes, leaving Southend to hold on in six minutes of injury time, to survive and relegate Argyle on goal difference.
To add to the twists and turns, there was controversy at Home Park involving the issue of fair play. Leading 2-1, Plymouth's injured keeper Matt Macey went to throw the ball out of play in order to receive treatment. However Scunthorpe's Josh Morris intercepted the ball and lobbed the stricken keeper to level at 2-2 and give the Iron hope of staying up. To make it worse, Macey was forced off with the injury. A week ago we saw Leeds United allow Aston Villa to score an equaliser when Leeds had scored in similar circumstances, however with so much on the line there was no such generosity here, with Scunthorpe refusing to allow a freebie.
Plymouth will feel justice was served as Graham Carey struck on 70 minutes to give them a 3-2 victory, but it was not enough to secure their League One status.

Plymouth goalkeeper Matt Macey looks to be injured and aims to roll the ball out of play. However, Scunthorpe's Josh Morris keeps it in and lobs the keeper!

AFC Wimbledon stayed up by virtue of a plus three better goal difference than Plymouth, but were made to sweat, as already relegated Bradford City dominated their encounter and almost scored a winner late on, which would have relegated The Dons, but a 0-0 scoreline kept them up due to a plus three better goal difference that Plymouth.
Walsall will also be playing in Sky Bet League Two next season, following their 0-0 draw at Shrewsbury.
At the top it was much calmer for Luton Town, thanks to their 3-1 victory over Oxford United to lift the Sky Bet League One trophy. George Moncur hit a brace in between Elliot Lee's strike to ensure The Hatters completed a wonderful season in fitting style. They can now prepare to play in the second tier of English football for the first time since 2007.
Barnsley could have been crowned champions had they bettered Luton's result, but despite taking the lead, the already promoted Tykes lost 2-1 at Bristol Rovers.
The last issue to be decided was who would take the final play-off spot, with Doncaster Rovers starting the day in sixth, and Peterborough chasing.
The Posh had that final position for a good while, as Joe Ward put them ahead against Burton on 19 minutes, as Ivan Toney went on to add two more to give them a 3-1 victory.
However it was not enough, as Rovers regained sixth with Kieran Sadlier 's 31st minute goal and John Marquis sealed their 2-0 win over Coventry and their play-off position with five minutes remaining.
