WATCH: Bayern Munich and Hoffenheim players refuse to play after abuse of owner

The visitors were leading 6-0 as the clock ticked into the final quarter of the game when their 'ultras' [fanatical fans] unveiled derogatory banners about their rival owner Dietmar Hopp.

The action of their fans saw both sets of players uniting and refusing to play on until the banners were removed, resulting in 13 minutes of uncontested football with the teams just passing the ball between each other in the centre circle.

With the bizarre standoff continuing, heated exchanges building on the sidelines and the banners failing to be removed, the referee ordered both sets of players off the field. This resulted in the Bayern players and club legend Oliver Khan pleading with their hardcore supporters to remove them in order to allow the game to continue.

The Bayern fans were protesting at the fact Hopp has invested millions of his own money into Hoffenhiem, turning them from a local amateur club until a top-flight outfit, currently sitting eighth in the Bundesliga.

While individual investment is the norm elsewhere in Europe, with English fans used to seeing clubs rising and falling depending on the wealth of their current owner, for German fans this is not the done thing and goes against the supposed traditions of German football.

Similar protests have been made against clubs like VfL Wolfsburg, Bayer Leverkusen and RB Leipzig in the past few seasons, though none so dramatic as this one.

The game was eventually completed with the players returning from the tunnel, as Munich saw out the 6-0 win.

At full-time there was a show of solidarity from both sets of players, applauding Hopp as he entered the pitch to shake hands with every one of them.
