USA progress to face England in World Cup semi-final after 2-1 win over France

England's World Cup semi-final opponents will be the USA, after Megan Rapinoe's brace was enough to see off hosts France.

Rapinoe has made headlines in recent days after footage emerged of an interview in which she made clear that she would not be visiting the White House should the United States win the Women's World Cup.

Her comments, which she backed up in a press conference prior to Friday's match-winning performance, provoked an angry reaction from the man occupying the office of the president via his twitter account.

Rapinoe, who evidently has the full support of her team-mates and manager, maintained that her focus was on football and she once again starred with goals in the fifth and 65th minutes before France ensured a dramatic conclusion by cutting the deficit late in the game.

The USA held firm to progress to face England in Lyon on Tuesday.

France's elimination also guaranteed Great Britain qualification for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

England needed to finish as one of the top three European teams at the tournament to book GB's spot in Japan and victory for the US means a semi-final place is enough to do that.
