Five points shy of Liverpool with a game in-hand, Manchester United’s emergence as a possible Premier League title contender has taken many by surprise. The Red Devils were riddled with inconsistent and erratic performances earlier this term but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s under-fire side appear to have found a semblance of stability in recent weeks.
On Boxing Day, United demonstrated their attacking prowess once more as they fell just short of a statement win away at Leicester. Despite scoring, Marcus Rashford also spurned a couple of golden opportunities that could have put United into an unassailable position at the King Power. Nevertheless, the unbeaten league run extends to eight games (W6-D2-L0).
Sure, Man Utd were heavily criticised for their meek Champions League exit but Everton, West Brom, Southampton, West Ham, Sheffield United and Leeds have been overcome since early November with Leicester and Man City held to stalemates. Solskjaer’s troops have also plundered a league-high 21 goals in that eight-game spell.
Wolves, meanwhile, find themselves operating in mid-table with a balanced W6-D3-L6 return from their opening 15 fixtures. The Old Gold have collected 76% of their points tally against the bottom-half (W5-D1-L1) but deservedly earned a share of the spoils from their Sunday night match-up with Spurs at Molineux thanks to Romain Saiss’ late header.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s outfit were without talisman Raul Jimenez, as well as regulars Jonny Otto, Leander Dendoncker and Willy Boly, yet still managed to shackle the twin-threat of Harry Kane and Son Heung-min relatively comfortably. Implementing a new style of play, there’s been an element of transition about Wolves but they remain mighty hard to beat.
The Black Country boys were excellent in possession but their attacks petered out in the final third and their lack of clinical edge could cost Nuno’s charges in Jimenez’s absence, although Wolves still retain the character, determination and defensive doggedness that’s served the club so well since promotion back to the top-flight in 2018.
One area of weakness in the Wanderers rearguard could be set-pieces. They have leaked six Premier League goals via dead-ball situations this season – only three clubs have conceded more – and that’s concerning when coming up against the wonderful delivery of Bruno Fernandes, plus Man Utd’s aerial threats led by Harry Maguire.
Maguire has proven a prominent figure in the opposition penalty box, only twice failing to have an attempt at goal this term, and his ability in the air will undoubtedly be targeted. Fourteen of his 20 efforts at goal have arrived via his head and with that in mind, I’m happy to take the 4/1 (SkyBet) on the United skipper landing at least one headed shot on-target.
I’ll also be looking to support Wolves to win a minimum of four corners at Old Trafford. The visitors have provided profit in this market in 11 of their 15 league fixtures this term, including games against Tottenham, Chelsea, Manchester City, plus away trips to Liverpool and Arsenal.
At Leeds and Leicester, the Old Gold fell one flag kick short of the required line.
Overall in 2020/21, Nuno’s team are averaging 5.07 corners per-game and so with six of Man Utd’s seven Premier League guests earning a minimum of three corners at Old Trafford, it appears to be an achievable tally, plus one that Wolves have accomplished in both of their recent visits here since returning to the top-flight.
Score prediction: Manchester United 1-1 Wolves (Sky Bet odds: 15/2)
