Tottenham v Liverpool

A shock 1-0 defeat to Burnley made it five league games without victory for Liverpool. They will be outside the top-four going into this game and the current champions are now a huge 9/1 with Sky Bet to retain their title. A significant gap has already opened up between them and the two Manchester clubs.

Spurs have also been thrown towards the back of the title race following their strong start to the season. Sitting just one point behind Liverpool, Jose Mourinho's men are now 25/1 to lift the Premier League trophy in May. They are in good form though, unbeaten in their last eight across all competitions with six of those ending in a win.

They are outsiders here but were also a big price when they delivered a 16/5 winning tip by beating Manchester City in November. Tottenham's 23/10 odds just look a little too high given the contrasting form between the two sides. Liverpool remain a quality side though, and they can consider themselves unlucky at times in recent weeks.

The 5/2 on a draw looks the best outright option while under 2.5 goals is also odds-against. It was a 2-1 victory to Liverpool in the last meeting but Spurs should be able to get something here. This is, after all, a Reds side who sit 13th (!) in the away standings.

Just two of their last nine away games in all competitions have ended in a win, one of those was against a very young Aston Villa side. In total, only twice during that run have they also kept a clean sheet. While all eyes will be on Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, Tanguy Ndombele represents great value at 17/2 to find the net anytime.

The midfielder has scored two in his last four Premier League outings and grabbed a brace in the FA Cup victory over Wycombe, that was made even more impressive by the fact that he was a late second-half substitute. His last six league appearances have also brought six shots.

Ndombele has taken up a more advanced role in recent weeks and that has contributed to his current scoring form. Prior to Crystal Palace away, he had only seen a shot in two of his ten league contests. It's a surprise to see Betfair price the midfielder up at 6/4 to have one shot on target here.

One player who does have huge appeal in the shots market is Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and the 16/5 available (also with Betfair) on the Spurs midfielder having at least one effort on target. Despite not being a prolific scorer, he has had efforts on goal in recent weeks.

His last three Premier League games have all brought at least one shot, with two coming in the win over Leeds. While he is 20/1 for a goal anytime, it's worth playing it safer with the 16/5 on an effort being on target given where these shots have been coming from. The majority of those have been from outside of the area.

Given the odds available on Hojbjerg and Ndombele being involved in the attacking side of the game, the outright result is one to avoid. However, it wouldn't be a surprise to see the points being shared between two sides battling on the outskirts of the top-four.

Score prediction: Tottenham 1-1 Liverpool (Sky Bet odds: 11/2)

  • This is the first time Tottenham and Liverpool have ever met on a Thursday in the top-flight. Liverpool have beaten Spurs on each of the other six days of the week, and they could become the third team to beat them on all seven in top-flight history after Everton and West Ham.
  • Following their 2-0 win against Man City last season, Tottenham are looking to win consecutive home games against reigning Premier League champions for the first time since beating Manchester United in both 1999-00 and 2000-01.
  • Only Man City have scored the opening goal in more different Premier League games than Tottenham this season. Spurs have lost none of their 12 games when scoring first but have dropped 10 points from such games (W7 D5).
