Slaven Bilic's future as West Ham boss was once again thrown into doubt after a 4-1 home defeat against Liverpool.
Quickfire first-half goals from Mohamed Salah and Joel Matip saw the hapless Hammers booed off at the interval.
Manuel Lanzini pulled one back in the second half but less than a minute later Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain extinguished their hopes of a comeback before Salah hit an exquisite fourth.
While there remains no real appetite to sack Bilic among the West Ham hierarchy, it is hard to see how he can continually stagger on to the next 'must-win' game to save his job.
The Croatian has just survived two of those, against Tottenham and last weekend's last-gasp draw at Crystal Palace, and this loss sharpens the focus once more.
David Moyes is the odds-on favourite at 1/4 in Sky Bet's next West Ham manager odds.
Former Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini is second in that market at 8/1.
West Ham are 2/1 to go down. Only Swansea (1/2) and Crystal Palace (4/5) are shorter.
Liverpool are odds-against at 11/10 for a top-four finish.
Post-match reaction
Slaven Bilic is backing himself to turn things around at West Ham.
"We feel that we started well," Bilic told BT Sport. "We were good at covering spaces behind us - they are good with the pace of Mane and Salah then we conceded two goals. (It was) very cheap but great counter-attack from them at the set-piece.
"We tried to compete in the second half. We changed the shape, we were more open, we were taking risks and came back with a goal but concede straight away and it was difficult. It's a big defeat for us.
"We can't talk about lack of effort for today, (but there is) no excuse to concede a goal from your corner kick."
On his future, Bilic added: "I will always believe in myself or I wouldn't be here.
"I have to talk to the chairman. Of course we are going to discuss this defeat because it is not the first one, it is the second one in a row at home.
"It is a very difficult situation for me to talk about. That is all I can say now."
Liverpool scorers Salah and Oxlade-Chamberlain both agreed that the Egyptian's early goal was key to collecting maximum points and both feel they are comfortable at the club after joining this summer.
Salah told BT Sport: "We scored at the beginning and that helped us to make the game easy. It is a good result in the end and we have to keep going and look forward.
"I was happy to come here, I had two great seasons at Roma and then I had the confidence to come to England again and that was the plan and keep looking forward. We have a great team."
England international Oxlade-Chamberlain, who moved from Arsenal in August, said: "It definitely wasn't an easy game Mo! It was a very intense game, especially when they made it 2-1 and I think it was crucial that we responded well and obviously we did that.
"We had to defend really well and with the counter, the boys up front, we are a big threat and I think we proved that time and time again.
"The four goals were enough (in the end), we could have had some more maybe.
"I feel like I'm getting there and it is important that every time I get an opportunity then I have to show what I can do and keep improving. There's a lot more to come from me."
