Michael Flynn on Ben White: Brighton defender's future, potential England involvement and Liverpool move

Newport manager Michael Flynn believes Ben White could be involved in England's Euro 2021 squad and has backed Liverpool to sign the Brighton defender.

White spent the 2017/18 season on-loan at the Sky Bet League Two club, featuring 51 times across all competitions, before spells at Peterborough and most recently Leeds.

His performances in West Yorkshire, where he played every minute as Leeds won the Sky Bet Championship title, has led to talk of a £30million move in the transfer window - although Brighton have said that the 22-year-old is not for sale.

And Flynn, who stated that White was Newport's best ever loan signing, outlined that the defender has left a lasting impression on him.

"I was fortunate enough in my career to play with Leighton Baines," Flynn told The TalkSPORT2 Social.

"There's only two players who I've said at a young age, who I think, would play for England.

"Leighton Baines was one and Ben White was the other."

The Euros were scheduled to take place across June and July this year but will now begin on June 11th 2021 in 12 European cities.

With a season of Premier League football under his belt, Flynn believes that White could be in the picture for England involvement at the tournament.

"Gareth Southgate, being an ex-centre back as well, he'll definitely know what he's looking for in his defenders," he said.

"Hopefully Ben can have another good season and force his way into the Euros squad. There's no bigger accolade than playing for your country.

"If he gets the opportunity then there will be nobody as proud of him as myself and the staff here (at Newport) because he's left a big, big impression on us."

White quickly established himself as key part of a Leeds side who won the Championship title by a ten-point margin last month. His performances has led to fans pleading for a permanent signing with #FreeBenWhite trending on Twitter for numerous days last week.

When asked if White has continue to improve during his latest loan spell, Flynn replied: "Absolutely, especially at a big club like Leeds because you could see his mentality and he could handle the pressure of being at a big club - and we all know what a big club Leeds are.

"He's worked with a fantastic manager in (Marcelo) Bielsa. For me, the sky is the limit for him because he's such a grounded individual, he's had a good upbringing, his parents are lovely and Brighton have looked after him and done well with him. I can't speak highly enough of him.

"I was fortunate enough to work with him at the beginning and he's a fantastic lad.

"He rang me after they had won the league. That says so much about the person that he is, because he didn't forget anything. Honestly, he's such a grounded individual."

Leeds remain the favourites to sign White before the transfer window slams shut in October, but Flynn admits that White would be good enough for a move to the current Premier League champions Liverpool.

"I'd love to see him at Liverpool," he stated. "I know Pep Lijnders, the assistant, and he's an unbelievable coach so I know that would help Ben improve.

"But he's got to do what is best for Ben White. Is that getting a season in the Premier League, hopefully getting regular games with Brighton, which I think he could do, obviously that's not my decision.

"Graham Potter will want to keep him and bring him on and then maybe sell him for more money after a year in the Premier League.

"That's a decision for Ben, but for biased reasons, I'd be edging him towards Liverpool.

"I'm that confident of Ben that I think he can force his way into any team. Let's not forget, he's going to have even better players around him, they'll bring him on and he'll keep improving. Jurgen Klopp gets the best out of all of his players.

"It's one of them where he's got to make that decision and do it for the best footballing reasons and nothing else. I do really think that he could play at the top. Whether that's this season or the season after, he'll definitely get there."

Flynn was speaking to The TalkSPORT2 Social - weekday afternoons on TalkSPORT2.
