Women's World Cup results: Scotland 3-3 Argentina - Scots blow 3-0 lead with re-taken VAR penalty sending them out of the tournament

Scotland were sent crashing out of the Women's World Cup as they lost a 3-0 lead thanks to a last-minute re-taken Argentina penalty given by VAR.

Scotland were 3-0 up and cruising after goals from Kim Little, Jennifer Beattie and Erin Cuthbert put them 3-0 with just 20 minutes left to play and well in with a great chance of booking one a place in the last 16.

However, Milagros Menedez pulled one back for Argentina and goalkeeper Lee Alexander's own goal when failing to deal with Maria Florencia Bosegundo's long-ranger sent up a tense final ten minutes, but nobody could have expected the drama that followed.

Sophie Howard gave away a penalty in the 86th minute, which was only given after a lengthy VAR check both in the TV booth and on the field, which resulted in the kick being taken after the clock had ticked past 90 minutes.

Alexander produced a fine save, and also stopped the rebound to send the Scots jumping for joy around the pitch, but the dreaded VAR graphic appeared again the referee went to check for a breach of the new penalty rules.

Replays showed Alexander had both feet off the goal line by the narrowest of margins, but new rules meant that the spot-kick had to be re-taken and this time Bosegundo drilled it down the middle to make it 3-3.

A stunned Scotland side had no time to re-group or respond as they were sent crashing out of the World Cup in the most dramatic of circumstances.
