Hull host Barnsley in the Sky Bet Championship on Tuesday night with both sides looking to avoid the drop.
The Tigers go into the clash unbeaten at home since Nigel Adkins took over in December, while Barnsley got their first win under new boss Jose Morais in a 2-0 victory over Birmingham at the weekend.
Hull got the better of Barnsley in their meeting at Oakwell earlier this season, substitute Fraser Campbell scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win for then-boss Leonid Slutsky.
The hosts are even-money favourites to secure all three points, with the draw priced at around the 12/5 mark and Barnsley upwards of 3/1.
The Tykes ended a seven-game winless run at St Andrews on Saturday as Oli McBurnie’s first-half brace put Barnsley one point clear of the relegation zone.
For Hull, they put in a solid performance in front of the Sky Sports cameras on Friday night as they dented Sheffield United’s play-off hopes, Nouha Dicko striking just before the hour mark to hand Adkins’ side the win.
Whilst Dicko hasn’t been one of the division’s most prolific scorers, his efforts have been crucial. His last two goals have been game-winning ones. He’s priced at 5/1 to score first against Hull.
Jarrod Bowen has been a shining light in an otherwise dull season for the Tigers. He’s scored 13 goals in all competitions and has played the full 90 minutes in eight of the club’s last nine games.
The 21-year-old, who is in his first full Championship season, continues to impress and Hull will be looking to him if they are to win on Tuesday evening.
Historically, this fixture has not been one for the purists. Four of the last five competitive meetings between these two have finished with under 2.5 goals, with the same number also being won to nil.
I’d be backing Hull to continue their good home record here as they look to move clear of relegation. Hull to win and under 2.5 goals at 11/4 looks good value given the lack of goals in recent years.
The best bet though is Bowen, who is a shade bigger than 2/1 to add to his impressive haul already this season and find the net in 90 minutes.
Prediction: Hull City 2-0 Barnsley (Sky Bet odds: 15/2)
Opta statistics
- Hull have won their last four home league matches against the Tykes, most recently winning 1-0 in November 2012.
- Barnsley won, however, on their most recent visit to the KC Stadium, a 1-0 victory in the FA Cup in January 2013.
- Hull have kept clean sheets in each of their last three home league games; their best run since five successive shutouts at the KCOM in February 2016.
- Barnsley have won as many league games on the road in their last four than in their first 12 this season (W2 L2).
- Hull’s last five goals in the Championship have all been scored by different players.
- Oli McBurnie has netted three goals in his first three starts for Barnsley. Before this run, he hadn’t scored a league goal since netting a hat-trick off the bench for Newport County in November 2015.
Team news
Hull City
Abel Hernandez looks unlikely to feature but a positive for Hull fans is that he has returned to action, having recently played for the Tigers' Under-23s side after six months out.
Barnsley
Morais will check on left-back Daniel Pinillos after he missed Saturday's win at Birmingham because of illness.
Matt Mills missed the victory with an ankle injury and remains doubtful for the trip to the KCOM Stadium.
