Tottenham transfer news: Joe Hart joins Spurs on free transfer after release by Burnley

Former England goalkeeper Joe Hart has joined Tottenham on a free transfer after being released by Burnley, agreeing a two-year contract.

Hart, 33, has played for Torino, West Ham and Burnley since being jettisoned by Pep Guardiola at City, will challenge Paulo Gazzaniga to be Hugo Lloris’ deputy in north London.

Jose Mourinho was on the lookout for a third keeper following Michel Vorm’s release at the end of last season.

Hart left Turf Moor on June 30 after two years at the club where he fell behind both Tom Heaton and then Nick Pope in the pecking order, making just three appearances in the 2019-20 campaign.

His career, which includes two Premier League titles, an FA Cup and two Carabao Cup wins, has stuttered since Pep Guardiola's appointment as Man City boss in 2016.

The Spaniard immediately judged Hart to lack the required ability with the ball at his feet, leading to subsequent loan spells at Torino and West Ham, and ultimately a permanent move to Burnley.

Poor form also cost him his place as England's number one, with the most recent of his 75 caps coming in a friendly against Brazil in November 2017.

Having played every minute in qualification, he missed out on a place in the squad for the 2018 World Cup when Gareth Southgate made the same judgement Guardiola had two years previously.

Following his move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and expected limited game time, Hart is 33/1 to make England's final 23 for next summer's Euros - he is the 11th goalkeeper in the betting, with Jordan Pickford, Dean Henderson and Nick Pope all odds-on.

Hart's arrival will help solve a problem for Spurs as under Premier League rules clubs must name at least eight homegrown players in their 25-man squad and his English nationality fills a slot.

If he wins the race to be Lloris’ understudy there will almost certainly be some action as Spurs face a hectic schedule in the opening weeks of the season.

Europa League qualifying clashes with the early rounds of the Carabao Cup, so Mourinho may have to use an Under-23s team in the domestic competition.
