Borussia Dortmund sack Lucien Favre; Edin Terzic appointed until end of season

Borussia Dortmund have sacked Lucien Favre as head coach after they were thrashed 5-1 at home by newly-promoted Stuttgart on Saturday.

Assistant coach Edin Terzic, former number two to current West Brom manager Slaven Bilic, has been appointed on an interim basis until the end of the season.

Favre, 63, led Dortmund into the Champions League last 16 by winning a group that contained Lazio, Bruges and Zenit.

But it has been a different story in the Bundesliga, where they sit fifth and five points behind leaders Bayern Munich.

Favre's departure ends a two-and-a-half year spell at the club, having joined from French side Nice in 2018.

"We are all grateful for Lucien Favre and his excellent work over the past two and a half years, where he and his team finished as runner-up twice. Beyond any doubt, Lucien Favre is a great professional and person," said Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke.
