Former Wigan boss Paul Cook is the early favourite to become the next manager of Sky Bet Championship side Bristol City.
The Robins sacked Dean Holden on Tuesday night after a 2-0 loss to Reading sentenced them to their sixth successive defeat in all competitions - a result that left them 13th in the second tier standings.
Lucas Joao and Michael Morrison ensured Reading returned to winning ways in a result that forced the Bristol City ownership into a change of direction.

Cook has been out of work since leaving Wigan in July and was linked with the Ashton Gate job in August before Holden was appointed.
The Latics were relegated in his final season but only due to a 12-point deduction imposed on the club for going into administration. He has both the Sky Bet League One and Sky Bet League Two titles on his CV.
On Holden's sacking, a club statement said: "Dean Holden has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect.
"Following a sixth successive defeat, the Bristol City Board have decided that a change of Head Coach is necessary.
"Assistant Head Coaches Paul Simpson and Keith Downing will take charge of training until further notice."
The defeat to Reading was the final straw for Holden. Joao was allowed time to control Michael Olise’s 42nd minute free kick from the right before coolly slotting his 20th goal of the season with a right-footed finish from eight yards.
And three minutes later Morrison exchanged passes with Joao on the edge of the box before eluding some weak challenges to force the ball past Daniel Bentley from close range.
Reading had opportunities to increase their lead after the break, while lifeless City barely created a worthwhile chance.
"The club would like to thank Dean for his service to the club over the years and we wish him well for the future. There will be no further comment at this stage," the statement concluded.
