Rodri becomes Manchester City's second summer signing after completing move from Atletico Madrid

Spain international Rodri has become Manchester City's second summer signing - and most expensive ever - after completing his move from Atletico Madrid.

The 23-year-old midfielder has signed a five-year deal with the Premier League champions.

Rodri officially became a City player on Thursday, the day after the LaLiga outfit revealed the 70million euros - around £62.8million - release clause in his contract, which had four years to run, had been triggered.

City have not confirmed the fee, but the value of the release clause eclipses the £60million City paid Leicester for Algeria international Riyad Mahrez last summer.

Rodri said: "What City have achieved in the last two years has been amazing and I'm looking forward to being part of such a talented squad.

"It's not just the titles they have won, but the way they have managed it, playing attacking football at all times. It's a style that excites me, as do the club's ambitions.

"I can't wait to start working with Pep Guardiola and my new team-mates, and hopefully we can achieve great things together."

The 6'3" holding midfielder began his career as a youth player at Atletico before moving to Villarreal in December 2015. He returned to Madrid in June last year for a reported fee of £20million.

He made 47 appearances for the club last season as they finished runners-up to champions Barcelona and eight points clear of city rivals Real Madrid.

City's director of football Txiki Begiristain said: "Rodri has proven himself to be a hugely talented, young midfielder who has all the attributes we are looking for.

"He works hard defensively, makes himself available to receive the ball and uses it well when in possession.

"He is a perfect fit for Pep Guardiola's team and we are confident he will be a success."

Manchester City's most expensive other signings

Riyad Mahrez (Leicester, July 2018, £60million)

City had to wait six months to sign the Algerian after failing in January 2018. The winger made 44 appearances and 12 goals in his maiden season but only 14 of those were Premier League starts and he has yet to establish himself as first-choice.

Aymeric Laporte (Athletic Bilbao, January 2018, £57m)

Took a while to settle after joining mid-season but has since proved to be a very good buy and is now Pep Guardiola's main man in central defence. He will take on more responsibility following the departure of Vincent Kompany.

Kevin De Bruyne (Wolfsburg, August 2015, £54m)

Up there alongside David Silva and Sergio Aguero as City's best buys in the last 10 years. Has had injury problems recently but is the creative fulcrum in the midfield and adds a genuine touch of class to an already star-studded line-up.

Benjamin Mendy (Monaco, July 2017, £52m)

Signed as a long-term solution at left-back but injuries have restricted him to 23 appearances since arriving. Add to that his love of social media which appears to frustrate and annoy Guardiola in equal measure means he still has a lot to prove.

John Stones (Everton, August 2016, £47.5m)

His confidence on the ball seemingly made him an ideal fit to be the main man orchestrating Guardiola's plan from central defence. He has some good games but also been exposed with some high-profile errors. Lost his place to Kompany in last season's title run-in but will get another chance now the captain has left.
