Manchester City avoided slipping further behind leaders Liverpool with a strong second-half performance as they beat Everton 3-1 at Goodison Park.
City looked slick early on and took the lead through Gabriel Jesus' diving header from yet another fine Kevin De Bruyne delivery (24), but Everton levelled as Seamus Coleman found just enough space in the box to dink over Ederson at an angle, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin got the final touch on the line (32).
Everton caused City's defence plenty of problems either side of the break, but Riyad Mahrez punished them for briefly sitting back, curling a free-kick from the edge of the box (71) under the grasp of Jordan Pickford.
And Raheem Sterling wrapped up the points with a left-footed volley at the far post in off the bar (85), meaning City remain second, five points off leaders Liverpool. Everton are 15th after three straight defeats.
Manchester City now host Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League on Tuesday night, before welcoming Wolves in the Premier League on Sunday at 2pm. Everton go to Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday at 3pm.
On Sky Sports: "I think we deserved the win. We could have killed the game in the first half but we didn't score the goals. We managed the game. Sometimes it has to be difficult, especially here. We did what we had to."
On his goal, the Algerian added: "Firstly I wanted to put it the other side and then I looked and there was a big space. I tried to whip it and it had the little bounce so it was difficult for him (Pickford). Of course to score at this moment was very crucial for us."
Mahrez played down the significance of the result in the contest with Liverpool, saying: "We're used to this. Last year it was head to head with them. We are built to try to win every game. It's still a lot of points to take yet."
Asked how hard the result was to take, the Everton forward told Sky Sports: "Extremely difficult. I thought we did really well to get back in the game and we were very much in the game after that.
"At 2-1 we had a chance and then they scored the third goal to put it to bed but I thought the all-round team performance was good and we're just unfortunate not to come out with a result."
The forward admitted a good performance was much needed given their last two results, and he added: "We're still very confident at home, we know we can play. We knew we had to work as hard as them if not harder. We had our game plan and I thought we stuck to it quite well."
On taking the goal from Coleman, he said with a smile: "To be fair I thought he was going to cross it. I got myself in a position to score and, as any striker would, try and put it in the back of the net."
