All-time XI: Footballers managed by Jose Mourinho at Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Manchester United

Jose Mourinho has managed some top sides over the last 15 years.

The Portuguese, now at Manchester United, has won the league in England, Spain, Italy and Portugal, as well as the Champions League and Europa League.

He is one of the most successful managers of his generation and some of the world's best players have praised his management methods.

We have decided to look at the players he has managed, putting together an all-time XI.

It wasn’t easy, but George Pitts has put together a strong-looking team.

All-time XI of footballers who have played for Jose Mourinho

Formation: 4-3-3

GK: David De Gea

A close call, with Petr Cech consistently turning out world-class performances under Mourinho at Chelsea, but De Gea takes it.

The Spaniard is the world’s best goalkeeper right now, his all-round game is very strong and who knows where Mourinho’s Man United would be right now without De Gea – who, amazingly, is still only 27 years of age.

A long-term successor to Iker Casillas at international level, it is no coincidence Real Madrid have been eyeing him for a number of years.

RB: Maicon

Probably one of the toughest positions to choose between.

Paulo Ferreira may not have been the best right-back Mourinho managed, but he performed consistently to a high standard at both Porto and Chelsea, while Sergio Ramos was right-back when Mourinho’s Madrid won the La Liga title in 2011/12. But it has to be his man at Inter – Brazilian full-back Maicon.

Premier League fans will not think much of Maicon after a rather uninspiring season at Manchester City, but he was sensational during his six years at Inter.

Despite having the likes of Dani Alves to compete with at international level, Maicon still won 76 caps for Brazil and he was the real definition of a flying full-back. He performed his defensive duties well – as Mourinho would want from any of his players – while providing an outlet by getting forward at every opportunity.

Maicon was a winner of Serie A (four times), Coppa Italia (twice), Champions League, Confederations Cup (twice) Copa America (twice), as well as the UEFA Club Defender of the Year in 2009/10.

CB: Ricardo Carvalho

Managers have their reliable players – Neil Warnock had Paddy Kenny, Sam Allardyce had Kevin Nolan and Mourinho had Ricardo Carvalho.

The centre-back won the league under his compatriot in Portugal, England and Spain and Mourinho got the very best out of him.

He formed a solid partnership with John Terry at Chelsea and received the individual recognition he deserved: Chelsea Players’ Player of the Year 2008, Team of the Tournament at Euro 2004, 2006 World Cup's All-Star team and UEFA’s Club Defender of the Year 2003/04.

CB: John Terry

A Chelsea legend who was world-class in Mourinho's Chelsea in both spells.

The England defender was one of the best in his position and he also contributed a handful of goals at the other end each season.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football in December 2017, Terry revealed he "would leave that pitch in a coffin" for the Portuguese.

The former Blues and Three Lions captain said: “The best manager and coach I worked with. He was the first one to come in and revolutionise things at Chelsea.

“His standards were so high. From the players, his medical team, he was on everything. His attention to detail was incredible and he changed the way I thought about football. The first session when he came in and at the end of it, the lads thought, wow that was a session.

“Mentally and psychologically, he had us from day one. We bought in to whatever he was going to deliver that day and he was the same when he came back.

“Having his presence there was enough. He had his eyes on everyone and when he speaks no one messes about or plays with a ball. You listen to him, he was the boss.

“I would give everything for him. I would leave that pitch in a coffin for him and every player felt the same.”

LB: Ashley Cole

Cole only got to play under Mourinho for two seasons (in the Portuguese’s two different spells at Stamford Bridge).

The left-back will go down as one of the best in his position of his era. He was quality for Arsenal and Chelsea and a consistent performer for England, earning 107 caps and playing at three World Cups.

Defensively solid, he had the athleticism to burst forward and provide an outlet down the left, often overlapping his team-mate and sending crosses into the box.

Now aged 37, he has just started a new season in the MLS with LA Galaxy.

CM: Frank Lampard

Another reliable player for Mourinho during his time at Chelsea, Lampard was the best in his position as a box-to-box midfielder. To score as many goals as he did from midfield season after season was an outstanding achievement.

Mourinho, reported by the Daily Mail in 2016, described Lampard as “probably the best player in the Premier League for one decade”.

He performed at the top for over 15 years for West Ham, Chelsea and Manchester City, while earning 106 caps for England, winning three Premier League titles, four FA Cups, two League Cups, the Champions League and Europa League as well as a number of individual accolades.

In his prime, he would have got in most of Europe's best starting elevens.

CM: Claude Makelele

Makelele famously went under the radar for his contributions as a footballer.

He was a key part of Real Madrid’s side that won two La Liga tiles and a Champions League in the early 2000s. He was then sold to Chelsea, something that reportedly did not sit well with Zinedine Zidane, probably the best in the world at the time.

The Frenchman reportedly said: “Why put another layer of gold paint on the Bentley when you are losing the entire engine?”

Makelele arrived at Chelsea a year before Mourinho and had five enjoyable years in west London. The Frenchman was regarded as the ultimate defensive midfielder – with the position now known as the ‘Makelele role’ – and comparisons have been drawn with current Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante.

Makelele’s role allowed his midfield team-mates more freedom to get forward and he made teams tick.

CM: Kaka

The final midfield spot was tough to pick, with the likes of Deco, Wesley Sneijder and Michael Ballack to choose from, but Kaka makes it.

The 2007 Ballon d’Or winner has earned a whole load of individual awards as well as trophies in Italy, Spain and European competition.

He revolutionised the number 10 role and was the world’s most expensive player – albeit for a few days before Cristiano Ronaldo followed him to the Bernabeu – after joining Madrid from AC Milan for around £56 million.

He scored 20 goals and assisted 37 under Mourinho at Madrid in all competitions and was simply world class on his day. He retired at the end of 2017, following four years with Orlando.

RW: Cristiano Ronaldo

The Portuguese duo appeared to have a rollercoaster relationship during Mourinho’s three-year spell at the Bernabeu.

Ronaldo is one of football’s all-time greats and it would be hard to leave him out of this XI. His statistics are unbelievable and he had an excellent three years under Mourinho – scoring 168 goals in all competitions, assisting 46.

ST: Didier Drogba

Drogba was unplayable at times under Chelsea and Mourinho in his first spell at the club and they signed him again 10 years after his first arrival at Stamford Bridge.

Drogba was 36 years old upon returning in 2014 and his experience was invaluable in helping them to a fifth Premier League title.

But it was in their first spell together when Drogba really excelled. He joined the club from Marseille in the same summer as Mourinho and impressed, going on to become a club legend. He had pace, power, athleticism and an eye for goal.

It was a close call between Drogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to lead this strike force, but the Ivorian gets the nod.

LW: Eden Hazard

The Belgian’s relationship with Mourinho appeared to turn sour in the Portuguese’s final few months at Stamford Bridge, but Hazard was a key force behind the 2014/15 Premier League title in Mourinho’s first season back at the club.

On his day, Hazard is one of the world’s best and he just makes the team ahead of Arjen Robben.
