Three-time defending champion Michael van Gerwen headed a 24-player field at the fourth staging of the Finals but he suffered his first ever defeat in the tournament in the quarter-finals.
James Wade took full advantage by beating his conquerer Raymond van Barneveld before edging out Michael Smith in a dramatic final.
