Two-nine dart finishes landed in Barnsley as Peter Wright wins Players Championship 17

Peter Wright claimed his third PDC title of the year with a 6-2 win over Daryl Gurney in the final of Players Championship 17, on a day which saw two nine-dart finishes hit at The Barnsley Metrodome.

The world number two added to his Players Championship 14 and Melbourne Darts Masters crowns thanks to a masterful display of finishing in the final, while Vincent van der Voort and James Wade struck perfect legs earlier in the day.

Wright defeated Christian Kist, Dennis Nilsson, Kyle Anderson, James Wilson, Simon Whitlock and Martin Schindler to reach his fifth ranking final of 2018 where three ton-plus checkouts helped him clinch the £10,000 top prize.

"I'm delighted to get the win today, it's always a great feeling to win against so many top players," said Wright, who was a World Matchplay semi-finalist in July.

"I've been having some good legs when I need them at crucial times and that's what got me the win today.

"When I'm playing well I don't think about it, I just throw!"

Gurney, who was appearing in his first PDC final since February, took the first leg and then applied pressure to the Wright throw, only for the UK Open champion to land a magnificent 157 finish.

The next two legs saw the players exchange holds of throw despite Wright missing six darts at double for a break.

Wright hit two double tops for a stunning 140 checkout and an all-important break to go 3-2 ahead and followed it up with a 101 finish in the following leg as Gurney threatened an immediate break back.

That was as close as the Northern Irishman got to Wright who took the next two legs to wrap up a twelfth ProTour title of his career.

Gurney was also happy with his performance on the day which saw a return to form for the Premier League star with wins over Aden Kirk, Robert Marijanovic, Alan Tabern, Ross Smith, Rob Cross and James Wade.

Seven-time televised title winner Wade landed a nine-darter in his 6-3 win over Michael Smith, repeating the feat of Van der Voort who hit one earlier in the day in his third round defeat to Cross.

Elsewhere, World Matchplay champion Gary Anderson went down to Smith in the last 16, while world number eight Dave Chisnall was defeated by Cross at the same stage.

German youngster Martin Schindler also enjoyed a successful day in Yorkshire as he reached his first ever ProTour semi-final.
