PDC World Darts Championship: Fallon Sherrock becomes TV star after history-making exploits on the oche

Fallon Sherrock became an overnight sensation as her historic William Hill World Championship victory catapulted her into the media spotlight.

After becoming the first woman to win a match at the PDC World Championship, Sherrock topped the news agenda in the UK and made headlines worldwide.

The official clip of the 25-year-old's winning moment against Ted Evetts from the @OfficialPDC Twitter account has now crashed through the five million video views barrier, blowing all other iconic darts footage from the past out of the water.

Sherrock, whose £15,000 winnings are already £3,000 more than if she had won the BDO Women's World Championship, is now hoping the shockwaves sent across the world will encourage the next generation of women - as well as the current crop - to believe they can beat the men on a regular basis.

"If I can keep on hitting the doubles then who's to say I can't keep going and beat any man," Sherrock told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"I feel I've always had the game but us women have never had the opportunity to prove it. Last night I proved to myself and everyone else that women can play darts against the men and beat them.

"Obviously we play against the men but not on televised stuff so I'm so pleased to get a win like that, it's only really just sinking in now.

"My hope is it inspires more girls and ladies to take up the sport, it's competitive and fun and I would recommend anyone taking it up."

The morning after her ground-breaking triumph, in which she averaged an impressive 91 and threw six 180s, Sherrock made a trip to the Good Morning Britain studios, where she defeated host Piers Morgan in a three-dart challenge.

The 25-year-old talent then visited the studios of several major TV and radio stations in the UK as well as doing interviews for international press as her story captured the interest of the world.

"It's been a crazy day," said Sherrock, reflecting on a whirlwind 24 hours.

"I knew I had achieved something special but I never expected it to be this big - it's started to sink in that I've done something important for women's sport.

"I've really enjoyed the day but it has been a surreal experience. I just hope it gives other female darts players the confidence and belief to go for it a bit more and inspires girls to pick up the game."

Her own personal Twitter account also saw a surge of over 12,000 new followers - and was even verified, much to her delight.

"I can't believe I got a blue tick!" added Sherrock, who is auctioning the match board to raise money for the National Autistic Society.

"When my manager told me I had been verified I couldn't believe it. That's when you know you've made it."

Sherrock is back on action on Saturday night when she takes on former Champions League of Darts winner Mensur Suljovic in round two.

"Mensur Suljovic is one of the best players in the world and it will be such a privilege to play him," she told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"When I looked at the draw and I saw I could play him in the second round I so much wanted to win my first-round match."
