Chizzy will need another miracle double night – like he did back in Exeter to effectively avoid relegation – if he’s to stand a glimmer of hope of reaching the play-offs.
Adrian, however, is in a great position and could even end the night in fourth place if he wins and still have a match in hand. So this is a really good opportunity for Adrian and he knows it.
Last week’s superb nine-dart finish emphasises just how well he’s been throwing recently. Technically, he’s in control of his darts and looking really comfortable in his action. He’s throwing with the same kind of conviction as the old Lewis again.
But despite this momentum, his price of 4/5 doesn’t seem as short as it should be – perhaps because Chizzy has looked pretty good in recent weeks with two draws against Peter Wright and Gary Anderson.
Although he’s struggling to seal the deal and missed seven match darts to beat Gary last week, he is at least making matches go the distance and is consistently contributing to a high 180s count.
So while I would say 4/5 is a good bet for Adrian, I’m going to put up the Match Action price of 11/2, which requires there to be over 7.5 180s, a checkout of more than 121.5 and over 11.5 total legs.
I have a feeling of trepidation rather than hope when it comes to Taylor this week.
I’m a sporting romantic so I’d like to say his final Premier League season will end in glory but he just looks like he’s fading and last week’s defeat to James Wade was a blow.
By his own admission he’s not playing or practicing as much anymore so will two matches be too demanding, especially with one of them being against Gary Anderson? It’s going to be a long old evening for Phil.
In the past he’d have handled this kind of thing really well but he was throwing a lot more then.
He had to fight really hard to get a draw against Anderson when they last met in Exeter, winning the last two legs of the match, and unless his opponent doesn’t turn up, this match will again take a lot out of him.
Anderson was great last week in his win against Peter Wright and on Thursday he knows that beating Phil will ensure he won’t drop any lower than his current position of third.
He’ll be very focused and I fancy him at 5/2 in the match treble market of winning, throwing most 180s and hitting the highest checkout.
He’s thrown almost twice as many maximums as Taylor this season (42 v 24) and has managed 13 ton+ checkouts – more than anyone else in the field – and over half of those have been 126 or higher. Seven of Taylor’s eight have been 121 or less.
Peter Wright is starting to feel the pressure now and although he’s currently sitting second in the table, there’s a real chance he might not make the play-offs.
He could be thinking about the fact he’s never previously finished in the top four and that’s another Wright monkey to get off his back. It hadn’t been in much doubt when he was playing so well during that UK Open window of the season but at least it’s still in his own hands.
Nobody below MVG in the table is assured of anything at the moment and nobody is handing anything to anyone – as Taylor found out against Wade last week.
James looks as though he’s gone back to just playing darts. After a run of bad luck and form, he’s grinding on and produced his trademark good timing to finally beat Taylor in the Premier League for the first time since 2009.
On Easter Monday he beat Peter en route to the semi-finals of the German Darts Masters so I think 7/2 is a good value price to do the same thing again three days later.
Just like the above fixture, we saw a preview of this next clash at the German Darts Masters on Monday, with Michael winning it 6-3 before going on to win the title.
They’ve both got that long trip from the east side of Germany to Belfast but with MVG in such good form across the weekend, I really think he’ll bully Barney and beat him up.
He comes into this match two points ahead at the top and with a match in hand so he’ll be feeling confident, secure and under no pressure. It’s an ideal situation for him to impress, especially after Adrian Lewis stole the limelight last week with the nine-darter.
He was probably upset someone else beat him to getting the first of the season and although I wouldn’t necessarily back him to respond with one of his own in Belfast, but I certainly wouldn’t be surprised if he did!
What I do expect is for him to get ahead early and run away with it. He’s also seeking payback after Barney ended his unbeaten run earlier this season.
Raymond will find it hard to get Monday’s fresh loss out against MVG out of his head and although he always gets such a good reception across the Irish sea, it didn’t work so well for him in Dublin.
OK, he got the charity points against a poor James Wade in the last match of the night but he was nowhere to be seen during his big clash with Taylor earlier on.
For this one I’m going to back MVG to win and hit the most 180s at 5/4.
If Phil has lost to Anderson earlier in the night, I’d expect to see the characteristics which have made him the champion he is come to the surface.
He has that much dignity that he won’t allow himself to lose twice in one night. He wouldn’t be able to face it and he’ll find a fountain of youth from somewhere or the adrenaline needed to prevent it.
He also has tough games ahead against Peter Wright, MVG and Adrian Lewis, so he’ll need something from the night to keep his hopes firmly alive.
In any case, Chizzy doesn’t fare to well against Taylor in head-to-heads and has lost their last four meetings, including earlier in this Premier League season.
Taylor is odds-on to win so to boost the price I’m going to throw in the high checkout at 2/1.
I must point out that the above goes out of the window if Taylor beats Anderson earlier in the night. Winning that game, in my view, won’t make him a better bet in this one as he’ll have already got something from the night and probably be mentally drained from doing so.
I’d say a loss would actually generate a better performance and more desire.
