Dave Chisnall smashes record average at German Darts Championship

Dave Chisnall smashed the record European Tour average in his emphatic 6-0 whitewash win over Mark Webster in round two of the German Darts Championship in Hildesheim on Saturday.

The St Helens ace posted a magnificent 118.66 average, firing in five 180s and missing just five attempts at double as he began his quest to win the £135,000 event.

Chisnall surpassed the previous record European Tour average of 117.94 which was hit by Michael van Gerwen against Gary Anderson in the final of the 2015 German Darts Championship, and he will now face Terry Jenkins in the last 16 on Sunday afternoon.

"Sometimes, you have days where everything goes how you want it to," said Chisnall. "Today was one of those days for me where everything was flowing nicely, even though the first leg wasn't great!

"Now I can go into Sunday with a lot of confidence and if I play like that again I will take some beating."

Meanwhile, Jenkins continued his renaissance with a tense 6-5 win over Ian White.

World Champion Rob Cross survived two match darts to beat Kyle Anderson 6-5 in a pulsating encounter.

Cross posted a 108.13 average, the second highest of the weekend so far, and he will continue his quest for a first European Tour title against Michael Rasztovits.

The Austrian dumped Simon Whitlock out with an impressive 6-3 victory, while there was also disappointment for seventh seed Jonny Clayton.

Austrian Darts Open champion Clayton was defeated 6-5 by James Wilson, who came agonisingly close to a nine-dart finish in the tenth leg.

The Yorkshireman hit eight perfect darts before winning the leg to take the tie all the way, and then held his nerve to set up a tie with Robert Thornton, who continued his resurgence with a 6-3 triumph over James Wade.

World number one Van Gerwen laid down a statement of intent with a 109.98 average in his 6-0 whitewash of Spain's Cristo Reyes.

The Dutchman will now face Martin Schindler after the exciting German youngster raised the roof at Halle 39 with a 164 checkout to seal a memorable 6-2 victory over Steve Beaton.

It was business as usual for number five seed Joe Cullen who staved off a spirited comeback from Josh Payne to win 6-4 and reach the final day of action for the ninth time this year.

Cullen will now meet Jan Dekker, who won through to the final day of European Tour action for the first time this year thanks to his 6-4 triumph over Gerwyn Price, who was sporting a supportive boot following surgery on his Achilles.

Number two seed Michael Smith powered through to the last 16 with a 6-1 rout of Poland's Krzysztof Ratajski and he will now play Friday's top performer Ron Meulenkamp who continued his impressive form with a 6-5 win over Stephen Bunting.

Daryl Gurney also enjoyed a successful return to the big stage, beating Darren Johnson 6-3 to set up a tie with Adrian Lewis.

The two-time World Champion found his way over the line in a tight battle with Mervyn King, while crowd favourite Mensur Suljovic will meet Darren Webster after the pair both recorded comfortable 6-2 wins over Andrew Gilding and Ricky Evans respectively.
