Day four report 

Somerset clinched their first Specsavers County Championship win of the season at the eighth attempt with a 179-run triumph over Yorkshire at Scarborough.

Yorkshire's pursuit of 337 in 90 overs quickly hit the buffers as they slipped to 12 for three, with Alex Lees, Harry Brook and Peter Handscomb all falling for ducks. 

They were later bowled out for 157 inside 39 overs.

Craig Overton claimed career-best match figures of nine for 134, including four for 47 in the second innings.

Somerset secured 21 points to ease their relegation worries, although they remain inside Division One's bottom two.

Yorkshire have now lost three of nine matches this season, including two of their last three, and have taken only four points.

They are mid-table and 38 behind leaders Essex, who have only played eight and have a game in hand. The two sides have yet to meet this season, however.

Somerset dominated from the moment 10th-wicket pair Overton and Tim Groenewald shared 61 to recover from 207 for nine in the first innings.

From then, they claimed a first-innings lead of 55 and declared their second after just 4.3 overs of day four on 281 for four having added 47 runs.

James Hildreth completed his first century of the campaign, finishing with 101 not out off 120 balls.

He had started the day on 85, with the declaration coming immediately after he reached three figures.

Overton was Somerset's stand-out performer, and he built on his first-innings five-for as the visitors made almost the perfect start with the ball.

Lewis Gregory bowled Lees in the first over before Overton had Brook caught behind with a brute of a delivery in the fourth - Steve Davies completing an excellent one-handed catch high above his head.

Next ball, Australian Test batsman Handscomb was lbw for a golden duck.

Tom Kohler-Cadmore hooked Overton for six in the eighth over, but he fell next ball for 13 caught at third slip as the score fell to 36 for four.

Gregory then bowled Adam Lyth for 37 off an inside-edge in the 18th - 67 for five.

Yorkshire reached lunch at 78 for five from 22 with Tim Bresnan and Adil Rashid at the crease.

Fours came in the first two overs of the afternoon, but it was only brief respite for Yorkshire, who lost captain Bresnan in the third.

He was bowled by a peach of a delivery from left-arm spinner Jack Leach for 25 - pitched outside leg and hit the top of off - before he struck again in his next to get Rashid caught at slip, leaving the score at 92 for seven.

When Andrew Hodd fended at an Overton short ball and was caught at mid-wicket in the 28th, Yorkshire had lost three wickets in 16 balls and were 96 for eight.

Lyth came out as a runner for Liam Plunkett, nursing a groin injury, and he added 37 in seven overs with Ben Coad - the highest stand of the innings.

Coad (17) even hit Leach for two sixes over long-on, including one into the press box windows before miscuing the same bowler to point with 133 on the board in the 35th over.

Plunkett did the same to Leach, also hitting the press box with a straighter blow on the way to an innings-high 39.

But his three sixes were nothing more than consolatory, and he fell to Leach - caught at slip - to end the match midway through the afternoon. 

Day three report

Somerset are on course for a first Specsavers County Championship win of the season against Yorkshire at Scarborough following a dominant third day.

Lewis Gregory's side claimed a first-innings lead of 55 during the opening hour of play before confidently accruing a total which will severely test Yorkshire on day four despite improving batting conditions.

Somerset closed on 234 for three from 68.3 overs to lead by 289 runs.

They upped the ante through third-wicket pair Tim Rouse and James Hildreth from midway through the afternoon onwards and have certainly not played like a team without a win in their previous seven matches this season.

The pair shared 144 inside 34 overs, with Rouse scoring 69 off 116 balls on debut and Hildreth 85 not out off 111.

Things have not gone Yorkshire's way, highlighted by injuries to key bowlers Ryan Sidebottom and Liam Plunkett.

Sidebottom went down with an injury to his back/side early on day one and has only returned to the field to bat.

England limited overs quick Plunkett left the field with a groin injury after gingerly completing his sixth over in Somerset's second innings. His fitness is of immediate importance given the start of the NatWest T20 Blast this weekend.

Sidebottom, on the other hand, is not part of Yorkshire's Blast plans and has until August 6 to get fit for the Festival clash against leaders Essex.

Yorkshire started the day on 159 for seven in their first innings and could only add 54 more runs.

Stand-in skipper Gregory claimed his first two wickets of the innings, bowling Plunkett for 19 and getting Adil Rashid caught at third-man uppercutting for an innings-high score of 49.

Craig Overton finished with five for 87 from 24 overs, while Tim Groenewald claimed his third wicket when, sandwiched in between the two Gregory strikes, he had Ben Coad (15) caught at first slip.

The early stages of the Somerset's second innings proved to be a case of slow and steady. Marcus Trescothick and Ed Byrom shared 53 inside 24 overs either side of lunch.

Byrom was dropped on 24 by Tim Bresnan at slip off Plunkett in the 17th over, with 37 on the board, the Yorkshire skipper's second missed opportunity in the game.

But the hosts did make the breakthrough in the 24th - Plunkett had gone off by this stage - when Coad had Trescothick caught at second slip by Adam Lyth for 27.

Part-time medium pacer Harry Brook claimed his maiden wicket in the 34th over when left-handed Byrom failed to keep out an in-swinging yorker as Somerset fell to 80 for two, leading by 135.

Rouse and Hildreth increased the run-rate in the second half of the afternoon and did not let Rashid, in particular, settle.

Three milestones then came in the space of a couple of overs in the early stages of the evening.

Hildreth reached 50 off 82 balls and Rouse off 97 as the pair recorded their century stand.

Play was suspended for bad light at 5pm with Somerset 191 for two from 62 overs, leading by 246 with 25 overs remaining in the day.

Play resumed at 5.25pm with 18 overs left in the day, but only 6.3 more were bowled before more bad light ended the session prematurely at 5.50pm.

Coad did manage to force Rouse to chop on during the brief spell late in the day.

Day two report

Craig Overton completed his second five-wicket haul of the season in the Specsavers County Championship to ensure Somerset claimed the initiative on day two against Yorkshire at Scarborough.

Seamer Overton took three of the four wickets to fall during a rain-shortened day which saw Yorkshire restricted to 159 for seven in reply to Somerset's 268. 

Only 44 overs were bowled, with no play possible beyond 3pm.

Overton (five for 78) has been central to Somerset's recovery in this match, and he now has 20 wickets for the season.

He was at the crease after tea on day one when the visitors were reduced to 207 for nine having elected to bat, but he hit 35 and shared a rapid 10th-wicket stand of 61 with Tim Groenewald to help Somerset record a second batting point.

Since then, Overton and Groenewald have shared all seven Yorkshire wickets to fall, and they now have a chance of claiming a first win of the season at the eighth attempt to ease their relegation worries.

They came into this match second bottom in Division One and 29 points adrift of safety.

Overton was one of five uncapped names in England's T20 international squad for the recent series against South Africa but was the only one who did not play - a decision which drew criticism from his director of cricket Matt Maynard.

However, the 23-year-old all-rounder looks to have bounced back from that disappointment in the best possible way by leading an attack which is missing his twin brother Jamie due to a back injury.

Yorkshire started the day on 42 for three with Harry Brook and Tom Kohler-Cadmore at the crease.

The pair took the score on to 71 - bringing up their 50-run partnership in the process - before Somerset ended the stand when Overton had Brook (31) caught at second slip by Marcus Trescothick as he fended at a short ball.

Yorkshire debutant Kohler-Cadmore was next to fall, also for 31, when he too played at a short ball, this time from Groenewald, and could only steer it down onto his thigh and into his stumps.

At that stage, Yorkshire were 88 for five in the 40th over and looking at a potentially significant first-innings deficit.

Yorkshire's stand-in captain Tim Bresnan could only contribute 11 before he became the sixth batsman to fall, edging Overton to Jim Allenby.

Adil Rashid and Andrew Hodd stemmed the flow of wickets with a stand of 48 for the seventh wicket, but that was broken when the latter was trapped lbw by Overton for 28.

That was almost the last action of the day as the players went off two overs later before umpires Tim Robinson and Steve O'Shaughnessy abandoned play at 4.35pm. 

Day one report

Seamers Tim Groenewald and Craig Overton impressed with bat and ball to drag Somerset back into the match late on day one of their Specsavers County Championship clash against Yorkshire at Scarborough.

Yorkshire were on top thanks to Liam Plunkett's first four-wicket haul in almost two years of Championship cricket. 

The winless visitors were 207 for nine and seemingly staring at another defeat having won the toss.

They are far from out of the woods, having been bowled out for 268, but Overton and Groenewald shared an innings-high 61 for the 10th wicket and then reduced the hosts to 42 for three at stumps.

Plunkett has been restricted to a diet of mostly one-day cricket with Yorkshire and England this summer.

The former Durham paceman missed the start of the season with a calf injury, meaning this is his first Championship appearance of 2017.

Plunkett took advantage of a typical Scarborough pitch with plenty of pace to claim four for 73 from 21 overs. He picked up two of four wickets to fall before lunch, one in the afternoon and the other with the first ball after tea.

The 32-year-old did an excellent job of leading an attack which lost Ryan Sidebottom to a muscle injury in his lower back midway through his fifth over.Sidebottom left the field and is unlikely to bowl again in the match.

Adam Hose top-scored for Somerset with 62 off 128 balls. Groenewald hit three sixes and two fours off Adil Rashid in the 72nd over and hit four sixes in all off the England leg-spinner in his 24-ball 41.

Overton, who hit one six in his 43-ball 35, was bowled by Ben Coad to wrap up the innings in the 76th over.

Had Tim Bresnan managed to cling on at first slip when Overton was 22 and facing Plunkett, Somerset would have been 215 all out.

Aside from that, Bresnan had a pretty good day as he struck twice himself, including the first wicket to fall, and claimed two catches. He had Marcus Trescothick (15) caught at first slip in the 11th over, leaving the score at 20 for one.

Plunkett then had Tim Rouse caught at second slip by Bresnan at the end of the 16th - 25 for two - before bowling opener Ed Byrom in his next as the score slipped to 30 for three.

James Hildreth played nicely for 32, but there was little he could do with a Bresnan snorter that took off from just short of a length and caught the edge. At that stage, Somerset were 67 for four in the 26th.

Plunkett had Steve Davies lbw for 16 before Coad bowled Jim Allenby through the gate for 19 during the afternoon, leaving Somerset at 141 for six after 44 overs.

Hose reached his fifty off 98 balls with nine fours and played nicely on both sides of the wicket. But he fell to Rashid shortly before tea - 180 for seven in the 60th.

Plunkett struck with the first ball of the evening session when he bowled Somerset skipper Lewis Gregory around his legs for 21 with 200 on the board in the 65th.

And 200 for eight soon became 207 for nine as Rashid had fellow spinner Jack Leach caught at mid-wicket having chipped a full toss to Bresnan.

Groenewald and Overton set about making the visitors' total more respectable and then set their sights on the Yorkshire top order.

Overton had openers Adam Lyth (four) and Alex Lees (12) caught at first and second slip before Groenewald had Peter Handscomb snapped up at second as the score slipped to 21 for three after 11 overs.
