Day three report

Yorkshire completed a resounding three-day win over Lancashire at Headingley to secure their second Specsavers County Championship win of the season.

Lancashire slipped from 141 for four overnight in their second innings to 209 all out, setting a victory target of just 60 half an hour before lunch.

Yorkshire, for whom Tim Bresnan had struck three times with the ball in the morning, knocked off the runs with all 10 wickets to spare inside 21 overs during the early stages of the afternoon.

They took 21 points from their fifth match of the campaign to close to within two of early pacesetters Essex at the top of the Division One table.

This was Lancashire's first defeat in five, and they have still not beaten their closest rivals in the Championship since 2011 when they won here and went on to claim the title.

With Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Dane Vilas at the crease at the start of play, the Red Rose would have hoped to at least put some pressure on Yorkshire in seamer-friendly conditions.

The ex-international pair had already shared 60 for the fifth wicket, but they could only add four more to that stand.

Vilas (22) was the first wicket to fall in the third over of the day, the 51st of the innings, when he edged Ryan Sidebottom to second slip as the score fell to 145 for five.

Chanderpaul then perished for 47 in the 54th when Ben Coad had him caught behind with 149 on the board. It was the second time the in-form seamer had removed the veteran West Indian in a match which has seen him claim eight wickets for 59.

There was brief respite for Lancashire with 13 runs coming off one Jack Brooks over as Jordan Clark and Ryan McLaren tried to steady the ship.

But when McLaren was caught at third slip off Bresnan's third ball of the morning in the 65th over, it was the beginning of the end for the visitors, who face champions Middlesex at Southport from Friday.

They lost their last four wickets for just 12 runs in 27 balls, including Clark for 37, who was caught behind in Bresnan's next over.

Tom Bailey edged Sidebottom to fourth slip before Stephen Parry gave Bresnan his third wicket when he edged behind in the next to finish the innings.

Bresnan ended with figures of three for 50 and Sidebottom three for 38.

Lancashire were forced to operate with spinners Steven Croft, Parry and even England Test opener Haseeb Hameed for a large part of Yorkshire's routine chase as they improved their minus three over-rate from the first innings to avoid a points deduction.

Adam Lyth, who hit a century earlier in the game, finished with an unbeaten 28 and Alex Lees 25 not out.

Twenty two of the 30 wickets to fall in this match went to catches behind the wicket, including the slips and gully. Not one was bowled. 

Yorkshire travel to Taunton to face struggling Somerset on Friday.

Day two report

Adam Lyth scored a battling century as Yorkshire pushed hard for victory over Lancashire in the Specsavers County Championship match at Headingley.

Yorkshire, replying to 123, started the day at 93 for two and had to work hard for their runs against an improving visiting attack, who restricted them to 273 all out on the stroke of tea.

Lyth notched his first four-day hundred of the season and the 22nd of his first-class career.

The Yorkshire opening batsman reached three figures after lunch off 234 balls having spent 71 minutes in the nineties and later saw Lancashire reach the close on 141 for four from 48 overs, a deficit of nine.

Lyth, who has a reputation for being an eye-catching stroke maker, was one of five wickets to fall in the afternoon, including three of them to the seam of all-rounder Jordan Clark.

Clark and England Lions seamer Saqib Mahmood equally shared six wickets for a Red Rose side who benefited from an increased consistency with the ball.

They also caught well, highlighted by a one-handed stunner from Ryan McLaren at second slip off the slippery Mahmood to get rid of Jack Leaning shortly before lunch.

Leaning and Lyth had shared 64 for the fourth wicket to advance the score from 120 for three. It was the first of two wickets in two balls for Mahmood just before lunch as Tim Bresnan edged to Dane Vilas at first slip, leaving the score at 178 for five in the 56th over of the innings.

Wicketkeeper Alex Davies also took a one-handed catch diving to his right to help Clark get rid of Ben Coad late in the innings. It came two balls after Lyth was caught behind chasing a wide one from Clark in the 77th over - the next ball he faced after reaching 100 - as Yorkshire slipped to 249 for nine.

Jack Brooks was the last man out for 18, caught by Haseeb Hameed off the bowling of Tom Bailey as Yorkshire we all out for 273.

Despite their improved fortunes, Lancashire's first-innings total on day one meant they were always fighting to limit the damage. 

And they have a mountain to climb having lost Davies, England Test opener Hameed, Luke Procter and captain Steven Croft in their second innings.

Davies was first to go when he was trapped lbw by Brooks, whose earlier knocked helped the hosts claim a second batting point.

Hameed was next to go, also trapped lbw for 10, when Coad struck in the 15th - 33 for two. Procter then edged Brooks to first slip in the 28th as the visitors slipped to 61 for three.

And it was 81 for four in the 33rd when a Croft edge against Ryan Sidebottom found Lyth at second slip.

Shiv Chanderpaul and Vilas then shared an unbroken 60 to ensure there was no further alarm for Lancashire.

They were faced with the first over of spin in the match when Azeem Rafiq bowled the penultimate over of the day and will begin day three on 43 and 22 not out respectively. 

Day one report

Ben Coad continued his remarkable start to the new season with a career-best six for 25 as Yorkshire seized control of the Specsavers County Championship Roses clash at Headingley.

Lancashire opted to bat and were then delayed by morning rain before slipping to 48 for six on the way to being bowled out for 123 inside 44 overs shortly after tea.

As expected, conditions favoured seam bowling, and Coad and Ryan Sidebottom, who claimed three for 30, took advantage in some style.

At one stage, Coad had figures of four for five from 3.1 overs, and his 32 first-class wickets for the season is more than anyone else in the country.

Yorkshire were left with 34 overs to bat before close, and they reached 93 for two from 25.4 following more rain late on.

Sidebottom, 39, and 23-year-old Coad were both on hat-tricks as an understrength Red Rose side struggled to cope with an on-song attack.

They are missing injured seamers Jimmy Anderson and Kyle Jarvis - both are here undertaking fitness work - and batsman Liam Livingstone due to Lions duty.

South African overseas all-rounder Ryan McLaren and Stephen Parry top-scored with 30 apiece after play started at 1.10pm.

Steven Croft was the only other man to make it to double figures.

Given their insistence that there would be more in the Headingley pitch than there was for the draw at Emirates Old Trafford last month, Yorkshire would no doubt have been happy to bowl, especially with the added bonus of overcast skies all day.

Sidebottom made the initial breakthrough in the seventh over when, with successive deliveries, he had Alex Davies caught in the gully and Luke Procter caught behind as he left alone to leave the score at 18 for two.

Coad then had Haseeb Hameed caught behind with his second ball in the 15th over. He then had Croft lbw and Shivnarine Chanderpaul caught at fourth slip at either end of the 19th before Dane Vilas fell caught behind down the leg side with the first ball of the 21st, leaving the visitors six down.

McLaren went beyond 2,000 Championship career runs, but he too departed in an action-packed afternoon. He followed Jordan Clark back to the pavilion, with both falling lbw to Jack Brooks and Sidebottom as the score slipped to 89 for eight in the 31st.

After tea, with Coad now bowling from the Kirkstall Lane End, he had Tom Bailey caught at gully and Parry caught at second slip by Adam Lyth, who then got off to a positive start with the bat on the way to a season's best 40 not out.

Lyth hit two of the first three balls in the innings for four off Bailey, and Yorkshire reached 50 in the 12th over one wicket down.

That wicket was Alex Lees caught in the gully off Bailey as the score fell to 21 for one in the fifth over.

Lyth shared 64 for the second wicket with Peter Handscomb, who fell for 33 before close when he edged Procter behind.
