Match report
Mumbai Indians inflicted a first defeat on Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 10 as they beat the defending champions by four wickets at the Wankhede Stadium.
Jasprit Bumrah (3-24) and Harbhajan Singh (2-23) starred with the ball to restrict Sunrisers to only 158-8, despite a strong showing from openers David Warner (49 off 34 balls) and Shikhar Dhawan (48 off 43).
In reply, Parthiv Patel also helped Mumbai off to a flier with his 24-ball 39, though his opening partner, England's Jos Buttler, could only manage 14.
Afghanistan legspinner, Rashid Khan - a revelation so far in the tournament - took an impressive 1-19 for Sunrisers in his four overs, but Mumbai's middle-order pair of Nitish Rana (45 off 36) and Krunal Pandya (37 off 20) powered them to victory.
After being put into bat first, Warner and Dhawan cashed in, but slowly. It took Sunrisers till the seventh over to score at a greater rate than a run-a-ball - Dhawan the guiltier party, taking 16 balls to hit a boundary.
In that seventh over, Dhawan blasted two fours and a six off Mitchell McClenaghan, but was then fortunate to earn a reprieve when seemingly caught for 21 in Hardik Pandya's eighth, only for replays to cast doubt over whether the ball bounced before the catch was taken.
While Warner and Dhawan kicked on, they both fell shy off fifties - the former in the 11th over, top-edging a reverse-paddle off Harbhajan a ball after launching him for six, while Dhawan departed in the 15th when bowled by McClenaghan.
Various batsmen came and went in the final five overs, Ben Cutting (20 off 10) the only to manage double figures - before becoming one of Bumrah's three victims - as the Sunrisers innings fell apart.
In Mumbai's run-chase, though Buttler didn't last long, he did at least crack three boundaries in his 11-ball stay at the crease before being bowled by an Ashish Nehra slower ball.
Rohit Sharma (4) swiftly followed Buttler back to the pavilion when trapped lbw by a superb Rashid googly in the fifth over, but a wayward sixth bowled by the returning Mustafizur Rahman handed the momentum back to Mumbai.
Rana shovelled the Bangladeshi left-armer's first ball over deep fine-leg for six, while Patel powered away three fours off as many deliveries in an over costing 19.
Rana's efforts apart, the Mumbai innings somewhat stalled thereafter though, with Patel not striking another boundary before falling to Deepak Hooda in the 10th over, and Kieron Pollard managing just the one six in his run-a-ball 11.
With 47 runs still needed from the final six overs, it was Krunal who provided the much-needed impetus to the innings, striking a six in each of the next three overs, on top of multiple boundaries.
And while Bhuvneshwar Kumar (3-21) dismissed Krunal and Rana with the first and last deliveries of his 18th over, the damage was already done, and Mumbai ultimately got home with eight balls to spare.
