Match report

Defending champions Sunrisers Hyderabad booked their place in the IPL play-offs with an eight-wicket win over Gujarat Lions.

Mohammed Siraj (4-32) and Rashid Khan (3-34) did the damage with the ball as the Lions were bowled out for 154.

David Warner led the Sunrisers response, making 69 not out from 52 balls, and shared a 133-run stand with Vijay Shankar (63no from 44 balls) to see his side home with 11 balls to spare.

For much of the first innings, the Sunrisers looked likely to be facing a chase in excess of 200 as Gujarat openers Dwayne Smith and Ishan Kishan set off at a ferocious pace.

Smith (54 from 33 balls) eventually fell to Khan late in the 11th over, with 111 on the board, but it was the wicket of Kishan (61 from 40 balls) two overs later than really triggered the collapse.

The opener was the first of four wickets to go down in the space of eight balls, including three in four balls, as Siraj and Khan each picked up two in an over.

Siraj then ended his spell by bowling James Faulkner and Pradeep Sangwan in consecutive balls and another burst of three wickets in four balls ended the innings, Bhuvneshwar Kumar striking with the first two balls of the final over to wrap things up.

Praveen Kumar claimed the early wickets of Shikhar Dhawan and Moises Henriques as the Sunrisers made a ponderous start to the chase.

Warner and Shankar began to accelerate as the innings reached the halfway stage but they required a large slice of luck to keep the partnership going as a thick Warner edge behind off Ankit Soni was missed by the umpire.

From there the batsmen were rarely troubled, both passing 50 before Warner hit a lovely shot back over Soni's head to seal the win from the first ball of the 19th over.
