Match report

Mumbai Indians condemned Royal Challengers Bangalore to another IPL defeat, beating them by five wickets in a tight finish at the Wankhede Stadium.

Chasing 163 to win, Mumbai captain Rohit Sharma hit an unbeaten 56 off 37 balls - while Jos Buttler earlier smashed 33 off 21 - to guide the home side to an eighth win in 10 and take them back to the top of the table.

Choosing to bat first after winning the toss, RCB made a better a better first of things than their last three dismal performances - AB de Villiers top-scoring with 43 from 27.

Virat Kohli (20 off 14 balls) hinted too at a return to form, smashing two sixes in the opening five overs only to then fall to the first ball of Mitchell McClenaghan's sixth.

That brought De Villiers to the crease who, unperturbed by the loss of his skipper, cracked the first of his three fours and sixes in his innings later in the over.

But De Villiers was one of three wickets to fall in four overs as the RCB innings threatened to derail, the visitors slipping to 111-5 after 14.

Pawan Negi (35 off 23 balls) and Kedar Jadhav (28 off 22) lifted the score with their 54-run partnership in quick time, though they fell to successive McClenaghan (3-34) deliveries in the final over.

RCB's spirits were lifted with the wicket of Parthiv Patel to the very first ball of Mumbai's run-chase, but Buttler's sweet striking helped the hosts to 55 runs from their six-over powerplay.

Buttler ultimately departed in the eighth, chipping Negi (2-17) to the fielder at extra cover, while the left-arm spinner also accounted for Nitish Rana (27 off 28) in his next over.

Mumbai then looked to be in a spot of bother when Kieron Pollard (17 off 13) holed out to deep midwicket three balls prior to Krunal Pandya (2) retiring hurt.

But Sharma's classy half century - featuring six fours and a six - safely saw his side to victory with a ball to spare.
