Match report

David Warner lit up Hyderabad with a scintillating, power-packed 126 off 59 balls as defending champions Sunrisers stormed to a 48-run win over top-of-the-table Kolkata Knight Riders.

Warner struck eight sixes in a brutal innings, posting the joint-fifth fastest hundred in the IPL and the fastest by a captain in the tournament off 43 balls, to power Sunrisers to 209-3.

Kolkata could not return fire to such devastating effect, although Robin Uthappa's 53 off 28 balls briefly threatened to take the game close, and they closed on 161-7.

Reflecting on Warner's knock, England's Stuart Broad - a guest in the Sky Sports studio - said: "He played some absolutely incredible shots, hitting every length the bowlers tried. I watched in amazement at times.

"He looks like the sort of guy who thrives on the responsibility of captaincy. You could tell from his celebration how much that hundred meant to him."

Warner benefitted from missed opportunities when he had 13 and 86, Woakes (1-46) misjudging a skied chance running back at mid-on before palming a head-high catch over the rope at long off.

The former came back to haunt Woakes instantly as Warner took 10 runs of the first two balls of an over that cost 17 - the Australian reaching a 20-ball fifty with a switch-hit for six off Sunil Narine.

The stand should have ended on 71 when Yadav tempted Dhawan, on 13 at the time, down the track but Uthappa could not complete the stumping.

The Indian had the best seat in the house as Warner pulverised Kolkata's attack to all parts, switch-hitting mercilessly and unleashing a thunderous torrent of power shots around the wicket.

Dhawan contributed 18 to the pair's second hundred stand in as many games, a feat they previously achieved in 2014, and it took an opportunistic run out to separate them - Kuldeep Yadav throwing down the wicket at the non-striker's end as Dhawan tried to pinch a single to short fine leg.

The dismissal momentarily quietened a crowd still jubilantly celebrating Warner's century, reached in the 11th over with a scampered two to deep midwicket - the Australian throwing his arms wide to soak up the adulation before jumping in the air in trademark fashion.

His energy was all but spent by the time he attempted to launch a Woakes slower ball into the stratosphere without getting hold of it, Gautam Gambir clinging onto the catch with a juggle.

Kane Williamson's sumptuous 40 off 25 balls featured back-to-back fours off the final deliveries from Woakes - the first an outrageous ramp over the wicketkeeper.

Kolkata limped to 12-2 in reply - Warner pouching Narine in the covers before skipper Gambhir toe-ended an attempted pull to mid-wicket.

Manish Pandey (39) rebuilt either side of a rain break in 78-run partnership with Uthappa only to chip a return catch back to Bhuvneshwar Kumar when well set.

Uthappa brought up a 25-ball fifty by launching Moises Henriques into the stands at midwicket - his fourth fifty in five innings but when he holed out off Mohammed Siraj, Kolkata's fate was sealed. The man who took the catch? Warner.
