Match report
Chris Woakes took two wickets as Kolkata Knight Riders earned a 17-run win over Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL on Saturday.
Woakes' second was the key wicket of Yuvraj Singh (26 off 16 balls) who had smacked him for six earlier in the 15th over as Sunrisers were beginning to close in on their 173-run target.
Earlier, Robin Uthappa top-scored for the Knight Riders with 68, though he was very fortunate not to have been dismissed first ball when his edge behind wasn't detected.
Put into bat by Sunrisers, Kolkata's pinch-hitting experiment with Sunil Narine at the top of the order didn't pay off this time, as he was bowled for six by the impressive Bhuvneshwar Kumar (3-20) in the third over.
Kumar should have had two in two when Uthappa came to the crease and seemingly edged the next ball behind, only for the decision not to be given by the umpire.
Uthappa made the most of the reprieve, as well as a missed run-out chance on 15, by cracking five fours and four sixes in his 39-ball knock.
There was further controversy when Uthappa was given out caught down leg on 52, only for the third umpire - checking to see if the ball had carried to the wicketkeeper - to overturn the decision when he noticed there had been no bat involved.
Uthappa did finally fall in the 15th over to Ben Cutting, but impressive middle-order cameos from Manish Pandey (46 off 35) and Yusuf Pathan (21no off 15) further lifted the Kolkata score.
In reply, Sunrisers started well enough, taking 32 from the first four overs, but openers Shikhar Dhawan (23 off 22) and David Warner (26 off 30) were guilty of not kicking on.
Sunil Narine bowled superbly - taking 1-18 from his four overs - and while Woakes was much more expensive, conceding 49, he did take two important wickets.
His first came in the 11th over, pouching a sharp caught-and-bowled chance to dismiss Moises Henriques (13), but it was Yuvraj's wicket that will have given him the most pleasure.
With 75 runs needed from the final six overs, Yuvraj signalled the Sunrisers charge by hitting Woakes' first ball for six, while Cutting cracked four off the third.
But Woakes responded well, doing for Yuvraj with a well-disguised off-cutter fifth ball that Yuvraj mis-timed down to the fielder at long-on. Sunrisers never recovered and ultimately came up short, finishing their innings on 155-6.
