14:12 Chelmsford

MIDDLETON VIEW was seemingly hard to train when with Clive Cox, his five runs for that yard interspersed with longish gaps in between, so it’s encouraging that he’s having his second start for Stuart Williams so soon after winning on debut for the Newmarket handler here last month. He still looked in need of a little work last time, diving to his right as the stalls opened but running on well to beat Thecoffeepoddotco by a length in a 5f novice. The runner-up has run creditably in a couple of subsequent outings, finishing second both times, and Middleton View looks fairly treated on a mark of 74.

Middleton View is the type that Williams does well with, and while he could never string two quick runs together for Clive Cox, this quick reappearance augurs well for his future, as does his new stable’s current good run of form, with five winners from 18 runners in the last fortnight.

The clincher for us is the booking of talented apprentice Harry Vigors, able to claim 7lb in this rider-restricted contest and a young lad going places. From a well-respected racing family, Vigors only had his first ride in public last month but has already racked up four wins and five seconds from his 14 rides, looking remarkably polished for one so inexperienced, although he’s no doubt been riding from before he could walk.

15:12 Chelmsford

We’re taking a flier with one on the basis of previous course form here, but while it’s not that easy to make a case for SUN FESTIVAL on recent form, he’s always tended to go well at Chelmsford, with a lifetime record over C&D reading 24751230.

Aside from the odds-on favourite, this looks a weak contest and with trainer Joe Parr also among the winners of late, Sun Festival might be worth chancing at huge odds.

His win and placed efforts here would certainly be enough to go very close, and the question is whether his old ability remains. A mark of 42 suggests it may not, but at 50/1 I’m happy to take a chance on another throw of the dice.
