Roger Federer's global legion of fans last have been waiting - and desperately hoping - since 2012 for their man to get his hands on the famous trophy for an eighth time.

That was his most recent Grand Slam title until he rolled back the years so remarkably in January to defy Father Time and silence the doubters by winning  his 18th at the Australian Open.

Having skipped the clay-court season to focus on the grass, a fresh Federer arrived at Wimbledon strongly fancied for glory but nobody would have expected his path to be cleared so perfectly of all his main rivals.

With Rafael Nadal dumped out by journeyman Gilles Muller in an epic five-setter on Monday, defending champion Andy Murray then followed on Wednesday when failing to overcome both his  dodgy hip and Sam Querrey.

While Federer, who has yet to drop a set, was producing another majestic performance on Centre Court to brush aside the man who defeated him in last year's semi-finals - Milos Raonic - there was dramatic news on Court 1 with Novak Djokovic succumbing to an elbow problem against Tomas Berdych.

On this evidence, there is simply no stopping the Swiss legend and the odds reflect that, with Sky Bet making him 4/11 for glory.

His semi-final opponent Berdych is 5/1 to beat him and 12/1 to go on and lift the trophy while Marin Cilic is 7/2 second favourite ahead of his meeting with 20/1 outsider Querrey.

Cilic came through a five-set thriller to sink Muller and he can now be backed at 1/3 to see off Querrey, who is 5/2 to pull off a minor surprise.

British singles hopes now lie exclusively with Johanna Konta, who will be back at the All England Club on Thursday in pursuit of a place in the women's final.

Such a feat hasn't been managed by a British woman since 1977, when Virginia Wade went on to lift the Venus Rosewater Dish, but the bookies rate her marginal favourite at 4/5 to defeat five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams (even-money).

The British number one is 9/4 to make history by emulating Wade and going all the way while Garbine Muguruza is the 6/4 tournament favourite as she prepares to face Magdalena Rybarikova (8/1).

Venus, 37, is 3/1 to claim her first Grand Slam title since the last of her five Wimbledon crowns in 2008.
