The three-year-olds have taken a bit of a battering against the older horses in recent days, but the Classic generation are fully expected to hold sway in the Qatar Sussex Stakes, the feature race on day two of Glorious Goodwood.

A trio of three-year-olds head the market here and they in turn are headed by Too Darn Hot who regained the winning feeling last time out when he landed the Prix Jean Prat by three lengths at Deauville.

That wasn’t a hot Group One by any means, but it was pleasing to see him rediscover his mojo, the manner of the performance ensuring he’s a skinny 5/4 favourite on Wednesday.

He does have questions to answer still – whether he can reverse form with Circus Maximus and Phoenix Of Spain from earlier this season for one – while the step back up to a mile isn’t sure to suit given how good he looked over seven in France.

However, a moderate bunch of older milers means there’s not a lot to take him on with, although, I must admit, I couldn’t get involved with the favourite at around 5/4. It looks a race to watch.

As for bets on day two, I really like the look of SEINESATIONAL at 25/1 (General 1/5 1,2,3,4,5 - 33/1 bet365 but four places) in the opening Unibet Goodwood Handicap over the extended 2m4f.

The presence of the 105-rated The Grand Visir here ensures seven of these are out of the weights but Seinesational isn’t one of those despite carrying the minimum eight stone.

Locally trained by William Knight, he’s run well at Goodwood on a few occasions including in a two-mile handicap in May where he was short of room two out before he stayed on to be third.

Second that day was Knight Crusader who went onto win a handicap at Sandown at the Eclipse meeting, while the selection himself came out of the contest to win at the same Esher track next time out.

It was after the Sandown race that Knight nominated a Glorious Goodwood staying handicap as his next main target, so a run out at Kempton last time, where he was keen in the early stages, should be considered as nothing more than a prep run for Wednesday.

With six wins from his last 16 races, Seinesational is rapid improver relative to this grade and 25/1 getting the five places looks a knocking each-way bet.

The following Unibet Handicap at 2.25 is a crackerjack 10-furlong puzzle for three-year-olds and cases can be made for loads of them.

Mark Johnston has a typically strong hand and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see any of his three win, but the one I think the handicapper has given a free hit to is Ralph Beckett’s FUTURE INVESTMENT at 10/1 (bet365, Betfair Sportsbook, Paddy Power).

This son of Mount Nelson is lightly-raced and he’s improved on each of his four starts, culminating in a really good effort in third in the Ulster Derby at Down Royal last time out.

He raced off 89 that day and went down to a couple of impressive last-time out winners, while the fourth horse, Halimi, has franked the form with a couple of subsequent victories.

Being left alone on 89 looks a generous piece of handicapping as there’s real hope Future Investment can progress to the sort of level his full sister Mountain Bell (107-rated Listed winner/Group 3 performer) has reached for the same trainer.

At Ripon he beat Wednesday’s rival Dubai Tradition giving him 7lb, so he gets a 6lb pull here despite that win and Tuesday’s rain looks in his favour on that evidence.

Finally, a small each-way bet is recommended on WHEELS ON FIRE at 28/1 (Bet Victor, Coral 1/5 1,2,3) in the Markel Insurance Molecomb Stakes (3.00).

Liberty Beach and Maven deservedly head the betting here, but Matthieu Palussiere’s colt is underestimated from an each-way point of view at fancy prices.

He ran a blinder in the Windsor Castle at Royal Ascot, making all on his own over on the far side where he still led the field with just over a furlong to go, before he was swamped by the stands’ side group in the closing stages.

Still, he was only beaten just over six lengths in 11th and it was no surprise he improved on that run massively next time out when a close second in a Listed race at Vichy giving the winner 4lb.

Drawn in 13 on Wednesday next to the stands’ rail, Palussiere has booked Danny Tudhope to do the steering and, while he’ll have to improve to beat the two at the head of the betting, he’s arguably already best of the rest and this speedy track might just suit him perfectly.
