Not For Catching? 2.10 Lingfield

The Bombardier British-Hopped Amber Beer Handicap is about the only contest in the UK on Sunday in which Mr Massey and I can find much agreement, where I’m keen to be against Thrill Seeker, and one of the two I can fancy to win the race is also David’s idea of the winner.

Thrill Seeker is a very short price for one who was beaten 8½ lengths on his handicap debut last time, and he looked a bit awkward under pressure when completing a fairly simple task in a Wolverhampton novice prior to that.

He’s not tried in a tongue tie, but that doesn’t inspire confidence, and the normally reliable William Haggas has seen plenty of his recent runners disappoint. The figures show he’s had two winners from a handful of runners in 2021, but I’m more interested to note that those winners are the only ones from his last 20 runners to be placed, and I’m in no rush to back this one at short odds.

Of much more interest for betting purposes is Catch My Breath, who comes here on the back of a clear-cut win over C&D last weekend, and the way he won that showed a degree of authority as he swept past the field off a modest pace.

He’s up in class, and 6lb higher in the weights, but he’s only 1lb higher that the mark off which he won at Ayr in the autumn, and he gets the benefit of Laura Pearson 5lb claim, having won under a 3lb claimer last time.

His best form has come at around a mile and around a bend, while his win at Ayr came after just a week off, making his career record after a similar break 141, with the ‘4’ coming in a field of 18 at Redcar. He seems sure to give his running, and I’d put him in as clear favourite if pricing the contest up.
