One To Keep An Eye On: 2.15 Market Rasen - Cyclop

Who doesn’t love a regional National? Everyone, that’s who, and when you’ve had your Lincolnshire fill, there’s the Sussex version just around the corner. Lovely.

Sumkindofking was the first to catch the eye. Given his Rasen form - a win and a solid fifth in a Summer Plate in two starts - he has the whiff of a plan about him here, having finished midfield at Ludlow earlier in the month on only his second start since March. Now 6lb lower than when second in the North Yorkshire National earlier in the year, he’s on the shortlist.

Dentley De Mee lurks down the foot of the handicap, but lurking is what he’s been doing for a while, and without winning. The fact he’s been sent off 7-2, 4-1 and 10-3 on his last three starts tell you he’s often well supported, but an overall record of 2-29 is enough to put me off.

Cyclop has already done PP readers a favour, having been successful at Chepstow earlier in the season, and you could have bet your last quid he’d turn up for this. His record at the track reads F1U2 (would have won easily when he fell, was trading 1.03 at the time) and the win and second both come in this event. He’s looked a rejuvenated character this season, and although a mark of 120 means that a bit more is required, if he gets into a rhythm on the front he could be hard to pass.

On A Roll?: 2.45 Market Rasen - Tumbling Dice

Rory’s got Tumbling Dice in his notebook after a couple of his hurdles efforts of last year, not least his run behind the classy Allart at Doncaster, and he goes into handicaps on a basement mark. He’s bred to want this sort of trip, and better can be expected.

He should have learnt a bit more from his latest experience at Southwell where he was held up again, but he gives the impression there will be better to come now switched to handicaps. He looks sure to improve at some point and this step up in trip might be the catalyst needed for him to progress.

Sue Smith’s record with them first time up in handicaps reads eight winners from 51 debutants in the past five years, and those having a pound at SP on all those would find themselves almost £75 in front. That figure is also backed up by a more generic measure of rivals beaten, and this is usually the time of year the yard start to hit form.
